Hiring for the Holidays
3 Reasons to Hire in December
Conventional wisdom says that the job market slows like "molasses in January" between Thanksgiving and New Years'. Here are three reasons hiring managers should step up their game rather than letting things freeze over between the holidays:
- Reduced competition. Many hiring managers put hiring on hold over the holidays to the point of not returning calls and answering emails. You can take this to your advantage by remaining proactive and engaged and beat competition that returns every January.
- Greater receptiveness. December is the time people start thinking about a fresh start. It's a great time to get their attention and bring a fresh surge of energy to your organization to start the new year.
- More availability. Candidates have flexibility with their schedules right now. You should be able to see them with ease for face-to-face interviews. The relative time of peace in your office also creates a distraction-free time for considering candidates and confirming a good fit.
So don't invite conventional wisdom to your holiday parties this year. Instead, deck the halls with résumés and you might get all the talent on your wish list.
