Growth might be a primary goal for your company (especially as a small business or startup). But expansion too early can drain resources, confuse your audience, and stall momentum. On the other hand, waiting too long might mean missing your window. So how do you know when it’s the right time to grow? | |
Here are three business expansion “green lights” that can tell you it’s time to take the leap:
- Your marketing is maxxed out. If your current marketing channels are consistently generating leads, closing sales, and seeing strong ROI, it may be time to scale. Look at your data: Are your campaigns plateauing not because they’re underperforming, but because your existing audience has been saturated? If yes, expansion—either to new markets or new products—might be the next logical step. (And if you’re unsure what data to be looking at to make this important decision, we can help!)
- Demand is outpacing supply. Whether you're booking out weeks in advance or your product regularly sells out, high demand is a good sign. But don’t just look at sales volume; examine where the demand is coming from. Is a particular region, demographic, or channel overperforming? That insight could shape where and how you grow. We recommend feeling out the appetite for growth with your audience before committing (for example, a survey); a stress test in a high-performing area could also provide valuable insights.
- You’ve already got the room to grow. This might mean your existing team has the bandwidth to take on more during a time of growth—or you’re able to hire and train new help. It might mean having the physical space and resources to grow (from production to shipping to transport). But it could also mean considering if your brand is flexible enough to carry its existing loyalists forward—the vendors you work with, the customers you already have on board. Can you preserve the overall goodwill and high quality for which you’re known? If you feel like you have capacity in all of these physical and intangible areas, it’s a great sign to move forward.
| If your marketing is clear, your demand is strong, and your next move aligns with your values and customer needs, growth might not just be possible—it might be inevitable. We have been hard at work this summer with one of our amazing clients, Sarasota County Area Transit, AKA Breeze Transit.
We’re proud to be launching some impactful new campaigns for them this summer!
Right now, we’re running a multi-channel campaign in Sarasota County targeting ALICE households, bringing strategic messaging directly to the community that needs it most.
We’re also wrapping up the upcoming Back to College campaign, made extra special by the fact that Breeze’s interns captured the photography, and our very own interns helped concept and create the campaign. Talk about a full-circle summer collaboration!
