1) TAKE OUR ANNUAL COMMUNITY PRIORITIES SURVEY

You are likely aware of the many issues and challenges our community faces on a daily basis, and we applaud your efforts in being an engaged and informed resident. NLI wants to remain engaged with you and seeks your input on some of our community’s most pressing issues. Below, we ask questions to gauge what issues you, our audience, deems important when it comes to our community’s long-term health and well-being. After reviewing responses from our audience, which includes over 1,200 Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland graduates, NLI will follow up with a variety of efforts in 2022 centered around the issues deemed most important by you and fellow NLI supporters. Access the survey here.
2) NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERSHIP CLEVELAND CLASS 38 APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DEC. 17TH

Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland (NLC) is our flagship program for grassroots leadership development. Now in its 27th year, this training begins in February, in partnership with the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. We’re proud to welcome both new and experienced leaders who want to gain confidence, learn skills, and use their voices to actively participate in effecting change. Participants will come away from the class with a deeper sense of their own purpose as leaders, a greater appreciation for the assets of their neighborhood, and a lifetime connection to the Institute’s network of more than 1,200 other grassroots leaders. Access the brochure and application here.
3) COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB RETURNS IN JANUARY!

We're kicking off the new year with a new book for the Community Book Club - My Grandmother's Hands; Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem. This is the 9th book in Neighborhood Leadership Institute's Community Book Club, and hundreds of community members have contributed to ongoing dialogue on social justice in previous groups. We invite you to join us in January. These Book Club discussions begin Tuesday January 4th. The group will convene weekly until February 8th. Guests will participate in discussions led by NLI facilitator GiGi Elder. Participants should be ready to discuss the Introduction and Chapters 1 & 2 at the first session. Get registered HERE!

NLI SPOTLIGHT:
LAURA HUFFMAN

Laura Huffman recently joined NLI and serves as the Program Manager for True2U. She works with mentors, including screening and training, and plays an important role for True2U, True2U CollegeBound, True2U 9th Grade Extension and the Summer Leadership Academy. Additionally, she maintains relationships with community partners and provides marketing assistance to the programs.

Laura has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cleveland Institute of Art and a Master of Arts in Education from Ursuline College. Prior to joining NLI, she held a few different positions at Case Western Reserve University, including program management and curriculum management roles.

When asked what attracted her to this open position, Laura states, “I am passionate about education and was at a point in my career where I was revisiting what was important to me. I needed to be involved with something that was meaningful, impactful and helpful to our youth. I was looking for a new opportunity that would help me engage with youth, make a difference and have a positive impact in my life and theirs. The True2U position really came at the right time and is a perfect fit for me!”

“NLI provides a very exciting, inspiring and positive environment! As a new member of NLI and the True2U team I have felt very welcomed and supported. It is a wonderful organization and I work with an amazing team! I have really enjoyed interviewing our new True2U volunteer mentors. I love hearing their stories, experiences and learning why they want to volunteer and how important it is to them to make an impact and support Cleveland youth and I am glad to be a part of that.”

Laura enjoys photography, art, crafts, traveling and spending time with family. Please join us in welcoming her to our organization.

TRUE2U
ANOTHER YEAR OF TRUE2U KICKS OFF!
True2 U kicked off another year of mentoring for CMSD 8th graders. This year, the True2U Mentoring Program is an integral part of PACE: Planning and Career Exploration initiative, which is a new embedded curriculum designed to create pathways to career opportunities for all Cleveland students. PACE puts scholars on the path from here to career. PACE:
  • acknowledges each scholar is different and sets all individuals up for success
  • provides scholars support and advising to explore their passions and dreams
  • encourages scholars to actively make decisions and plan a career pathway that helps them achieve their goals
  • calls upon the community and industry to open their doors to allow for exploration of many occupations and career possibilities

Good luck to all CMSD students as they grow and develop in this program!
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT
SIX SITES OPEN FOR SCHOOOLS AS NEIGHBORHOOD RESOURCES (SNR) PROGRAM
Our flagship program for community engagement, Schools as Neighborhood Resources (SNR) is a model of school, family and community collaboration that turns schools into community gathering places designed to improve the educational environment and social development opportunities for students and families. We again partner with CMSD and the City of Cleveland to open six school buildings for out-of-school time three nights a week, November through March. Programs include recreation and enrichment programs for all ages. All SNR sites are open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights and all activities are free and open to the public. Participants range in age from preschoolers to senior citizens. Learn more here.

COMMUNITY HEALTH
ONE LAST DIAPER DRIVE IN 2021!
NLI's Healthy Communities team is hosting its last Drive-Through Distribution event this month. We are glad to report over 150 moms and expecting mothers will be participating at this community event. In 2021, NLI hosted five of these events along with a variety of community partners and served over 500 total attendees. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
