YOUR INSTITUTE NEWS & UPDATES

JANUARY 2021
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM
THE INSTITUTE

All of us here at Neighborhood Leadership Institute wish you a happy, safe and prosperous New Year! 2020 brought many challenges that most of us were not anticipating. Now, as we enter 2021, some of those same challenges persist. Regardless, we will all push forward and work to make our community a better place to live.

With constant concerns for COVID-19 surrounding us, our programs and outreach efforts will continue to look different. But we remain committed to offering valuable and meaningful programs in the areas of neighborhood leadership, community health, True2U mentoring and youth engagement. Through digital means and video communications, we will maintain our connections to you and to the community at large. Happy New Year, once more!

NLC APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JAN 22.

Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland is our flagship program for grassroots leadership development. Our 37th Class, which begins March 18th, is presented in partnership with the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University.

We’re proud to welcome both new and experienced leaders who want to gain confidence, learn skills, and use their voices to actively participate in effecting change. Participants will come away from the class with a deeper sense of their own purpose as leaders, a greater appreciation for the assets of their neighborhood, and a lifetime connection to the Institute’s network of more than 1,200 other grassroots leaders. Together, we share a common goal—to improve the quality of life for communities in Greater Cleveland through collective leadership and engagement.
SNR PROVIDES SAFE SOCIAL OUTLETS FOR RESIDENTS

The Schools as Neighborhood Resources program runs until March 15, 2021. Each week, we will convene communities on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This program allows us to ensure the community recreation needs are met and residents remain active.

With current health conditions and concerns present, participants will be subject to strict social distancing and hygiene practices at all locations. Please note that due to current COVID-19 health precautions, the Woodhill Community Center in Buckeye is closed and unable to host SNR activities.

Five of our other sites remain fully open. Click here for the SNR locations:

Neighborhood Leadership Institute develops grassroots leaders who help rebuild the bonds of community and improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents throughout Greater Cleveland.

COMMUNITY FEATURE:
CLEVELAND CONSENT DECREE - COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS
United Way of Greater Cleveland and the Cleveland Branch of the NAACP are partnering to sponsor
Community Conversations held over a 10-month period. This in-depth series of dialogue centers on
police reform mandated through the Consent Decree and its ramifications for our community.

NLI is a proud supporter of this Community Conversations series. Please join our first Community Conversation and help to elevate change in our community.

NLI FEATURE:
LOCAL PHILANTHROPY SUPPORTS NLI
Neighborhood Leadership Institute is pleased to announce it has secured funding support from three local foundations. We are very appreciative of this funding and eager to continue the work that it will support.

Cleveland Foundation is providing financial support for the True2U Mentoring program. We have consistently received support from the Cleveland Foundation over the years and are glad to see this student mentoring program get the dollars it deserves.

Two new funders have made recent commitments to NLI. The Nord Family Foundation is providing operating funds to NLI in support of our mission and portfolio of programs. Additionally, the Saint Luke's Foundation has provided grant dollars to support NLI's mission as well as specific programming for Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland and our Civics Workshop Series.

Please join us in thanking all three of these community partners!
NLC ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
PETER WHITT

Peter Whitt joined the Saint Luke's Foundation in September of 2020. The native Clevelander serves as the Senior Program Officer at Saint Luke's and brings much experience to the local foundation. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Cleveland State University and a Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and serves a key role in the foundation’s grantmaking process, which includes research, relationship development, applicant support and decision making.

Peter, a graduate of NLC's Class 10, shares one of the most important lessons learned during his neighborhood leadership training: “To value the assets and lived experience of those misunderstood and labeled as marginalized.”

He also notes the critical mission of NLI and its role in shaping leaders. “To be an extension of NLI is to be courageous by getting on the ground level just to make a difference. That is the foundation of change that continues to grow people as the pillars.“
