With COVID-19 and recent racial unrest filling our news feeds and daily thoughts, NLI wants to make sure you are taking care of yourself. Our Healthy Communities team has been working hard to provide helpful content on its social media pages.

From yoga to mental health check-ins, staff is working to provide you with the tools you might need to cope with the stress and anxiety that may be building up during these challenging times. Check out the Facebook feed HERE.
CURRENT EVENTS: LINKS & RESOURCES FOR COPING

Our community continues to face challenges. We understand that the current unrest caused by racial injustices often leads to mistrust and tension within the community. We encourage you to learn more about the issues and gain additional insight and perspective on the ever-present racial inequities our neighbors face.

Cleveland Healthy Kids' Meals Campaign
Neighborhood Leadership Institute has partnered with a coalition of community groups and the American Heart Association to ensure that Cleveland kids have healthier options at local restaurants. The Cleveland Healthy Kids’ Meals Campaign is seeking a City Council ordinance that make kids’ meals at Cleveland restaurants healthier by ensuring that water, milk and/or 100% juice are offered as default drinks, not sugary drinks that pose a health risk to our kids.   Evidence demonstrates that fast-food marketing disproportionately affects low-income, black, and Hispanic youth, who are also at greater risk for chronic disease due to diet.
The Kids’ Meals coalition hosted an Advocacy Week in May, highlighted by a rally for the healthy default drinks policy with City Council Health Committee Chair and NLC Class 5 graduate Blaine Griffin. Councilman Griffin has provided great leadership on this issue, as well as addressing inequities in health outcomes, access to care and access to healthy food.

Issues of inequality are woven into the fabric of so much of our day to day life. It is important that we use every opportunity to address issues of health disparities. Cleveland City Council and Councilman Griffin need to hear from from community members who care about kids health and health equity. Since the healthy default drinks ordinance will be introduced soon in City Council, now is the time to weigh in on behalf of Cleveland kids.

Will you take action?

You are invited to join NLI for its inaugural Community Book Club, where we will host weekly virtual sessions to discuss books covering important social issues.

On June 30th at 7:00 PM we will discuss chapter 1 of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. The book club session will be led by GiGi Elder and Annie Morino. Subsequent chapters will be discussed every Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

We look forward to hearing from the community and learning from each others' perspective. NLI executive director Kevin McDaniel shared his thoughts concerning recent events and ongoing social unrest earlier this month. You can find it HERE. With this Community Book Club, we aim to create and sustain a safe and comfortable space so everyone can share their thoughts and insights on the challenging topic of racial injustice too.
NLI SPOTLIGHT
VERANDA RODGERS

Veranda Rodgers is the Founder and Executive Director of Pregnant with Possibilities Resource Center (PPRC). She holds an MBA and also works as a nonprofit consultant and adjunct faculty member at Cuyahoga Community College. Veranda is a Class 33 graduate of Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland, and like many NLC alumni, her commitment to the community is unparalleled.

Pregnant at 16 is the story that could have stopped her destiny, but instead she broke barriers to make a brighter future for herself. Her personal mission is to teach, motivate and inspire others to give birth to their possibilities. She has been featured in The Cleveland Women’s Journal, Who’s Who in Cleveland, WKYC News Channel 3 Rising and WZAK’s Future Black History Makers. She has also spoken at Cause Camp, Empowering Women, PowerHERful Youth Summit w/ Solidad O’Brian, and Black Diamonds. Her passion for excellence and advancement in everything from business practices to helping others discover their passions makes her an asset to the individuals that she serves.

Through her leadership at Pregnant with Possibilities, the organization remains dedicated to teen pregnancy prevention and positive birth outcomes among pregnant women. In 2019, PPRC partnered with NLI’s Healthy Communities initiative to help navigate pregnant women to services to minimize mortality risk. “COVID-19 has altered our world and made basic tasks difficult. PPRC partnered with NLI to bring hope to families in need of essential baby items. To date, 200 families have been served,” Veranda shared. “As a graduate of Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland, I gained knowledge and skills that have helped me navigate the nonprofit sector, while building a network of change agents. The most valuable part of the program was learning about the rich history of each neighborhood, while creating resources to make things better.”
