3 Tips for Acing the Job Interview
During COVID-19
by Pamela Ware
Director of Marketing and Public Relations, SWAPTE
Bring your smile, use a firm handshake and suit up has been the call to action for improving your chances for making a good first impression with a prospective employer during a job interview. Now, those tried and true methods have to be revisited due to guidelines implemented by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to stop the spread of COVID-19 . Recommendations include wearing a mask in public, temperature checks upon entering some buildings, social distancing is encouraged amongst other recommendations.
However, adhering to CDC guidelines creates a challenge for job seekers if they are asked to interview in person at some point during the recruiting process, a job seeker may ask. How can a prospective employer see my smile through my mask? Will an employer think I'm rude if I don’t shake their hand.
Unfortunately, you’ve got to adapt to a new job screening process in order to ace the job interview. Remember, although you can’t change the circumstances as a result of COVID-19, you can change your attitude and focus on showcasing your skill set to a prospective employer through the interview process.
Listed are a few tips to ace the interview:
- Use the coronavirus as an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to adapt to change.
- Hone in on your skill sets when answering questions.
- Acknowledge the obvious as to why you wear a mask and not provide a handshake when the moment arises by referencing CDC guidelines. If wearing a mask, use a solid color, preferably black or a dark color so that your mask will not be a distraction during the interview.
