To rev up sales,
use incentives
for your staff
If you want to make more sales, you have to motivate your team to do so. Here are some ways to incentivize great work, from Chamber Gold member Acacia IT.
1 – Raffle prizes. Sales people receive raffle tickets for every sale or objective they reach, then at month’s end you hold a raffle for prizes;
2 – Sales Madness. Set up a bracket for your sales staff. Whoever has the most sales at the end of a set window moves onto the next round.
3 – Conversion contest. Distribute new leads evenly, and reward the person who converts the most sales.
4 – A slump-buster contest. When business is slow, challenge your team to contact former or existing customers to sell repeat or upgraded products.

Developing workforce
from high school up
|
“Workforce development” is the modern-day buzzphrase, vital to any community’s well-being, if mildly vague and loosely defined. Just what is workforce development, and who’s supposed to be doing it?
If “workforce development” is literal – helping employable people of any age prepare themselves for the jobs and careers of the moment, and of the future -- we took 2 affirming tours in greater Tucson last week.
Out of order, yet in proper chronology, on Friday we visited the bold new Pima County Joint Technical Education District flagship campus in Tucson ahead of a well-attended, excited dedication.
On a tour of classrooms, we met enthusiastic, poised high school students who are learning how to draw blood, explore physical therapy, fly a drone, cut hair, take care of young children, become entrepreneurs, make exquisite cupcakes … on it goes. From cybersecurity to culinary arts, from robotics to nursing to pharmacy technician, and so many fields between – more than 30 programs in all -- students make time in the late afternoons, or on weeknights, for JTED training beyond their high school work and lives. Under the leadership of Superintendent Kathy Prather, this training is happening at the flagship campus, and on campuses across greater Tucson.
These students can land immediately in jobs and careers. Job openings abound! Or, they can pursue further training.
Such training might happen on the Downtown Campus of Pima Community College, where on Thursday we took a spin through PCC’s new Automotive Technology & Innovation Center, part of the college’s Center of Excellence for Applied Technology, in a bright blue building just east of Oracle Road and north of Speedway.
The $12 million center is billed as PCC’s newest gem – and, indeed, it is. The first floor of the structure is filled with vehicles, well-tooled benches to work on engines, technologically equipped classrooms upstairs and -- best of all – immersed students, about 400 of them this semester, learning an essential skill, namely the ability to keep us all moving. So they are “current,” students can learn about electric vehicles, and there’s a red Honda auto-drive prototype in the room, too.
Car companies are sponsoring bays for worker training. That’s consistent with Chancellor Lee Lambert’s vision, to connect the college with industry, which has immediate needs for workers and a pipeline of talent for what can be.
At both the JTED and Downtown campuses, these new programs and their buildings are just the tip of what’s to come. More investment is ahead at both places. Rising nearby on the Downtown Campus, crews are building the college’s Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Center. When it’s finished, the next waves of workers, sparked through JTED and completed by PCC, will help drive the economy.
That’s workforce development, driven competently by educational institutions deserving of our support.

Buy now for ‘Wreaths Across
America Day’ Saturday, 12/18
|
Chamber member the American Legion Auxiliary Oro Valley Unit 132 is beginning its wreaths sponsorship program to ensure the ordered wreaths are received in advance of the National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 18.
If you would like to order a beautiful $15 handmade Remembrance Wreath in honor of or in memory of someone, please go to the website, or send a check and note to ALA Oro Valley Unit 132, PO Box 69246, Oro Valley, Az., 85737. For more information, email Onita Davis at [email protected], or call 520-229-1064.
Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the national organization Wreaths Across America remembers, honors and teaches. On that day, wreath-laying ceremonies are held at Arlington National Cemetery, and at more than 2,100 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
Locally, 1,400 Remembrance Wreaths were placed last year at the Arizona State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana. This year, with the increase in the number of veterans interred at the cemetery, “we will need 1,800 wreaths,” Onita said.

At Red Cross celebration,
personal stories highlight
how blood donations help
|
One by one, speakers shared their personal stories about blood donation during the Oct. 5 grand opening and ribbon-cutting at the American Red Cross blood donation center, occupying a visible, bright new space on La Cholla just north of Ina.
Kathy Bell’s daughter Lizzie became widely known for the rare blood ailment that required seemingly endless transfusions to keep her alive.
“Our family is always indebted to all the donors,” Kathy said. “Elizabeth would not be alive today if somebody wouldn’t take a pinch for a little kid. We lived in the hospital” until Lizzie received a bone marrow transplant in 2013. Today, she’s a University of Arizona student.
“If every eligible person donated 1 time a year, it would change everything,” Kathy said.
On average, Pam Harlow makes 24 donations a year, and has given more than 30 gallons of blood during her life. “To be able to give platelets is such a rewarding feeling,” she said. It takes time, but for Pam it provides “that moment of meditation and gratitude for the blessings I have had.”
“Sometimes you can take for granted blood donations,” said Dr. Laura Stephens, who is the blood bank and transfusion medicine officer for the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Banner University Medical Center Tucson. “There is a person behind every one of those units.” Someone says, ‘I will do something selfless so that others may live’.”
The new space is 6,500 square feet of space, with 7 machines for donation, 6 private health history rooms, temperature-controlled blood storage capacity and more storage than ever. It should enable expanded gathering of blood and platelets.
The Foothills Blood and Platelet Donation Center is open Monday and Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, 7:30-3:30; and Friday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The address is 7354 N. La Cholla, Tucson, 85741.
Blood donations are needed urgently. Go to redcrossblood.org, call 1-800-Red Cross or download the blood donor app to schedule an appointment.
