Partners in Housing Gets Its Start!

"A unique first-in Colorado program...helping Anita and others like her with transitional housing and a chance to become self-sufficient again."

In the late 1980s, a group of community leaders began researching local needs, and programs in other communities, supporting families who were experiencing homelessness. Among this group was Bishop Richard Hanifen of the Diocese of Colorado Springs and the Executive Director of Catholic Community Services, Sr Lucille Krippel. Partners in Housing was then started as a program of Catholic Community Services, but quickly was incorporated as a separate, but connected, non-profit in November 1991.

The article below, titled "Homelessness Tackled in New Transitional Housing Venture", announced the start of Partners in Housing. Nearly thirty years later, we continue to provide transitional housing and supportive services to Anita and families like hers giving "new hope and new solutions".

Catching up with Doug and Chris
We interviewed two of Partners in Housing's founding Board Members! Check out Doug Carter and Chris Acker's 5-minute interviews below!
Doug Carter: "I remember we started with five families. Apartments in Colorado Springs were 12% vacant, so they were experiencing their own economic hardships. But that vacancy is what allowed for some owners to say, yea, we've got a vacant in the corner, we got so many vacant, we're happy to give you one. So those five apartments are what we started with, with five families. Now you're over 100 families being served [a year]. Over 30 years, 4,000 families, 10,000 children..."
Chris Acker: "When they became teenagers, all three of my kids...decided they wanted [their birthday party] to be a theme where everybody who was invited brought a gift not for them, but for Partners in Housing and then the kids would bring all of the presents down. They learned about giving and giving back and doing for other people when you can."
