Video: 25 Years of Serving Families in Need
25 years ago, Partners in Housing was started by Catholic Charities of Central Colorado and the Diocese of Colorado Springs as a mission to provide a service to families experiencing homelessness. In the following 3-minute video, Executive Director Mary Stegner, Bishop Hannifen, and Bishop Sheridan talk about the start of Partners in Housing, the great need for transitional housing, and the hope Partners in Housing is able to give families in need.
"Partners in Housing, I think, is an organization that would like to see itself go out of business, but it's not in the foreseeable future...because as we know, the people that Partners in Housing help are growing in numbers, so thanks be to God they're going to be around for as long as people need them."
Housing and Beyond
In 2016, The Catholic Herald ran an article celebrating Partners in Housing's 25 years of serving families in our community and also calling attention to the ever-growing "quiet crisis in the Pikes Peak Region". Partners in Housing serves a nearly invisible homeless population, also known as the "hidden homeless" because the families are on a relative's sofa, living out of their car, or living in a tent. Due to the lack of visibility, the need for ending family homelessness can often be overlooked. In 2016, Partners in Housing received 1,004 applications for our 60 transitional housing units (we are now up to 68 units). More housing is needed to keep up with this need. The full article in the Catholic Herald "challenges anyone who wants to end homelessness to donate to Partners in Housing rather than giving handouts to homeless people on the street." In 2016, our program success rate (measured by the % of families that successfully moved onto their own stable housing at the end of our program) was 92%. Last year, even with COVID-19 impacts, our program held steady with a success rate of 87%.
