ANNUAL T'HRÖMA DRUBCHÖD RETREAT.

The Annual T’hröma Drubchöd arose from Lama Chödak Gyatso Nubpa Rinpoche’s unwavering commitment to his precious lama, His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. Lama Gyatso pledged to H.E. Chagdud Rinpoche to uphold this profound cycle of practice here in America. Since that promise, the retreat has been maintained every year without interruption under Lama Gyatso's auspices. His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche led the very first T’hröma Drubchöd retreat in 1995 in Los Angeles.

The Vajrayana Buddhist practice of T’hröma is a wrathful means for cutting through ego and revealing the enlightened mind through the practices of generosity and compassion. This profound method, which includes the practice of Chöd, is unsurpassed in its capacity to heal, overcome energetic disturbances, and bring about realization of the true nature of mind.

His Holiness Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje (Dudjom Rinpoche), the incarnation of Dudjom Lingpa, indicated to H.E. Chagdud Rinpoche that the T’hröma Chöd would be of great benefit in the West. His Holiness also encouraged Chagdud Rinpoche to spread these teachings widely throughout the West.

The T’hröma Drubchöd thus emerged from Chagdud Rinpoche’s commitment to uphold this cycle, and it has been sustained annually by Lama Gyatso, his students, and the Ari Bhöd lamas every year since 1995. At the inaugural Drubchöd, His Eminence Chagdud Rinpoche offered the following:

"Through the practice of T’hröma chöd, thirteen yogis have attained rainbow body at the moment of death, and many others have accomplished a transcendent stance of fearless compassion.”

A treasure revealed in the 19th century by the great tertön Dudjom Lingpa, the T’hröma Nagmo cycle is classified as a mind treasure, a gongter (དགོངས་གཏེར) in Tibetan. Unlike earth treasures unearthed from physical locations, mind treasures arise spontaneously within the awakened mindstream of a realized master. Dudjom Lingpa received the entire T’hröma cycle, including its sādhanas, commentaries, and visionary transmissions—directly through pure visions, often in the presence of enlightened beings such as Guru Padmasambhava and the Dakini Yeshe Tsogyal.

This T’hröma cycle, formally known as Dzinpa Rangdröl ("Self-Liberation of Clinging"), offers a complete path: from ngöndro (preliminaries) to generation and completion stages, and culminating in the Great Perfection (Dzogchen). Renowned for its directness and potency, the T’hröma practice guides one’s mind and meditation toward the highest realization and remains a deeply relevant method of transformation, especially suited for practitioners in these degenerate times.
