Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

In the wake of another divisive election, we remain an angry and divided nation. Check out Archbishop Gomez's response to the electoral results here. Many challenges lie ahead, especially in light of the divisions over the promised policy initiatives of the new administration.

In his Encyclical Letter, Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis calls for a "better kind of politics" that is in service of the common good. He says that this type of politics involves working across differences to listen to others and find creative solutions with human dignity at the center of politics. This must be the priority as people of faith in the coming months and years.

There is a starting point in our political system. In the last line of his first inaugural address, President Abraham Lincoln called the nation to begin at a certain place, where we trust our better natures. His words capture how we begin to move forward through the challenging times that lie ahead:

"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

Peace and blessings, Father Gil
