32nd Ward Newsletter: May 6, 2022
Greetings!

The Wrightwood Neighborhood Association will be hosting their monthly community meeting with 19th District Commander Amin Jessani Monday at 6:30. Commander Jessani, along with CAPS officers, will be present to answer any questions you may have and give a brief update on the state of public safety in the 19th District, including addressing the police response to a series of armed robberies and shootings in the 19th. For more information including the registration link, click here. This is a virtual meeting. More details about the robberies and shooting are listed below in the Police Alert.

City crews have removed the temporary existing asphalt on Armitage Avenue between Damen and Western Avenues and will be prepping the base and repaving it over the next few days. Repaving should take about a week to complete. Parking on Armitage is allowed during non-work hours for the crews but cars should be removed early each morning.

Bally's has been chosen as the operator of the state licensed casino. There is a Town Hall scheduled for next Thursday, May 12 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the UIC Isadore and Sadie Dorin Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road. Representatives from the city and Bally’s Corporation will be there to share additional information, respond to questions, and hear from community members.

Have a nice weekend,

Scott Waguespack
32nd Ward Alderman
Logan Square Farmers' Market Opening Day
(**Extra Street Closure for the First and Last Day of the Market**)
The Mayor announced that the City has selected Bally’s Corporation to be the recipient of its sole casino license and the developer to create a world-class casino-resort and entertainment experience in Chicago on the site of the Tribune Publishing Center at Chicago and Halsted. You may read the full press release here. Many other factors were considered that led to the selection of Bally’s as the Mayor’s recommended partner on this historic development. The recommendation report will be available at chicago.gov/chicagocasino.

There is a Town Hall scheduled for next Thursday, May 12 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at UIC. Registration and additional information may be found on the link here: https://chicagocasinotownhall.eventbrite.com.
Street Sweeping Schedule
Next week, street sweeping will occur in sections 4, 5, and 6 (Hamlin Park and Roscoe Village). Click on the map below to see your section's schedule.

Please be on the lookout for signs and make sure to move your vehicle on your scheduled day (south and east sides of the street are normally done on the first day, north and west on the second; please watch for signs).  Please take the time to help clear the curb in front of your property. It is helpful to clear debris and clogs to keep the sewers flowing well. Please do not sweep landscaping debris into the street. Any landscaping debris should be bagged and put in the alley.
Public Safety Section

There was an armed robbery that led to a shooting yesterday in Lincoln Park at Webster and Wayne. A 23 year old was robbed and shot for a bag and cellphone at about 3 a.m. This attack was likely carried out by the same crew of criminals that robbed and carjacked several other people over a two night period in Lincoln Park and Lakeview. The Police have been working to gather all possible witnesses and video from the area and all potential locations the phones and any credit cards were used by the criminals. They have recovered one of the vehicles on the south side of the city. The Police Department has indicated the victim did not have any i.d. on his person at the time, and he is in critical condition after being shot several times. This is a heinous crime that should have the maximum penalties charged, with no downgrade of charges, when the police apprehend these criminals.
The 19th District Commander Amin Jessani, has informed us he has additional mission teams working the area this weekend. The attached alert from detectives has more information. If you have any video from cameras in the area, or information about the incidents that the police have not yet seen, please share it via the Area 03 detectives-contact info is posted in the alert below.

Update- License Revocation Hearing for Dinner and a Movie. The second hearing for Dinner and a Movie- 2500 N. Ashland- took place this past week with testimony from the city side. The city attorney presented a good case for closure but since the defense attorney was not prepared, the case was delayed until May 16th when we will hear from defense witnesses. The testimony from residents and police officers was very well done, and helpful to the case made by City Attorney David Smith. We will provide an update following the May 16th hearing.
California Water Main Project Update

All dry pipe completed between Diversey to just south of Fullerton. Diversey to Logan was pressure tested. The plan for next week is to install fire hydrants from Logan to Fullerton and begin sewer work for that same stretch. There is a connection scheduled to be done at Schubert on Monday and chlorination (disinfection) will follow from Diversey to Logan.

Southbound traffic lanes are closed during construction from 9am-4pm. An open lane in each direction is available on the existing northbound lanes during construction (Diversey to Logan).

The contractor is sweeping and cleaning up site at the end of each day and placing temporary pavement within driving lanes.

Should you have any questions or concerns, you can either ask the construction foreman during the project, or call any of the following numbers:

  • 24-Hour Service and Information Line: 311
  • DWM Office of Public Affairs: 312-744-6635

Armitage Water Main Projects

Armitage, Western to Kedzie- The first crew completed transferring all water services from the old water main to the new one on Armitage between Kedzie and Humboldt, and they started side connections to the existing water main at the side streets. The second crew started transferring water services between Humboldt and California.

There are no trees scheduled to be removed and no ComEd manholes to be relocated at this stage. There are no scheduled water service shutdowns for this week. West bound traffic on Armitage between Western and Kedzie remains closed until completing the installation of the new water main on the north side of the street.

Armitage, Damen to Western- Restoration of the street between Western and Damen has begun and is expected to be completed next week.
UP North - Metra Project Update
Last week, Metra hosted an open house for the UP North Rebuild: Fullerton to Addison Project. The open house format was used to accommodate differing schedules and provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about components of the Project that they were most interested in. Additionally, to be responsive to attendees' requests for a more global question and answer format, Project staff answered questions as a panel.

The materials presented at the open house have been posted to the Project's website to ensure that the community has the most up-to-date information, and we've linked them below for your reference.

At the open house, the community was encouraged to provide comments that would be shared with the Project design team, the city, and the Alderman’s office to inform the design efforts for retaining walls and fencing and potential options to restore vegetation in the public way. To submit your comments on these elements online, click here. For additional Project comments, please submit via the Project email address: [email protected].

Comments are encouraged to be submitted by May 23 to be incorporated into the environmental review process and for design considerations. All materials are submitted through a federal review process.

The Frequently Asked Questions page will continue to be updated in order to address questions and comments that are received.

Illinois State Police Now Hiring
The Illinois State Police is now offering a Lateral Entry Training Program! In this new Lateral Entry Training Program, Cadets will NOT have to relocate upon graduation and District assignments. Cadets will still report to the Illinois State Police Academy for the first three weeks of the Cadet Class, receiving an introduction into Illinois State Police Cadet life. Cadets will then return home, where they will report to a regional location daily for continued instruction, returning to their residence at the end of the day. Cadets will return to the Academy during specific phases of their training, such as Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, however, they will not be required to attend the Academy for more than three weeks in a row (home for the weekends) and for no more than 5-6 weeks total throughout the entirety of the Cadet Class.

To be eligible for the Lateral Entry Training Program, an applicant must still meet the requirements for pre-employment as well as the Fast Track Program. Applicants will still be required to go through the entire Merit Board and Illinois State Police hiring process, however, we will streamline the Illinois State Police Academy training process.

Invite from the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce to Participate in a Community Project!

The Lakeview Public Art Committee and Special Service Area (SSA) 27 are proud to announce the creation of a community-driven mosaic in West Lakeview this spring! The mosaic will be installed on the south wall of the UPS Store located at 3501 N. Southport Ave and will represent the connectivity of Lakeview throughout the four seasons.

The primary goal of this project is to engage the community in all aspects of the mosaic. From conception to execution, we've looked to local residents and businesses for input, ideas, and feedback. Now we are calling on the entire community to help us bring the mosaic to life. That's right – we are holding open workshops for the community to contribute to the mosaic tiling and installation! Led by our project partner Greenstar Movement, these workshops will provide an opportunity to learn about the art of mosaic-making and help create West Lakeview's first mosaic. The community tiling workshops will be held during the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, May 11th - Friday, May 13th: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
  • Wednesday, May 18th - Friday, May 20th: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

You can join us for 5 minutes or for the full 3 hours, on just one of the scheduled days or all six days. There is NO wrong way to get involved and RSVPs are not required for small groups, so you can join us at any point during the above dates and times!

However, if you and/or your organization would like to bring a large group of 15-20 individuals to help tile the mosaic, please reach out to Nicole McLellan at [email protected] or 773-472-7171x102 to schedule a separate tiling workshop.
