32nd Ward Newsletter August 1, 2025

Greetings!

The summer is flying by! We're just about two weeks until Chicago Public Schools are back in session. The first day of class is Monday, August 18th. This link leads you to CPS' back to school checklist, including health requirements, transportation questions, and school supply lists.

Bike the Drive happens August 31st. This is a wonderful family event when cyclists can ride up and down Lake Shore Drive with absolutely no traffic! Registration is required and all proceeds go to the Active Transportation Alliance, a nonprofit advocating for cyclist, pedestrians, and public transit users in the City of Chicago. They are actively looking for volunteers to help with the ride and if you're available, consider donating your time to this great outdoor event.

Two other major events to note are National Night Out, which is a festival with local police officers. The other is our extremely popular annual shredding event. Details on both are below.

Have a nice weekend.

2025 Street Cleaning Calendar

Next week, street sweeping will occur in sections 7, 8, and 9 (South Lakeview). Click on the map above to see your section's schedule.

Please be on the lookout for signs and make sure to move your vehicle on your scheduled day (south and east sides of the street are normally done on the first day, north and west on the second; please watch for signs). Sweepers will do more than one pass on the block in their initial cleaning but will not come back to clean sections outside of their officially scheduled day.

Please take the time to help clear the curb in front of your property to keep the sewers flowing well. Any landscaping debris should be bagged and put in the alley by your trash cans. Please do not sweep landscaping debris into the street. Piles of leaves and heavy garbage also clog the sweepers and will cause significant delays. Other large objects like branches and metal will also damage the sweepers, so please remove them from curbs.

Residents can view street sweepers in real time using the Sweeper Tracker online tool

Recap from Beat 1434 (Wood/North/Rockwell/Armitage)

The police are still investigating the homicide that occurred near Ehrler Park last month; friends and family of the victim have not been cooperative with the police.

There have been 3 robberies in the past 5 weeks, including one resulting in an arrest. There were 3 burglaries, which is down from 9.

There were 15 thefts from auto, 11 of which were catalytic converters. See below for tips on how to avoid being a victim of this crime.

Catalytic Converter Theft

Numerous catalytic converter thefts have been occurring throughout Chicago. After a catalytic converter has been removed, a car will sound loud and "gravelly" when started.

Catalytic converter thefts typically occur at night or early morning hours and when vehicles are parked for prolonged periods in spots accessible to thieves. Thieves tend to target older SUVs, because they sit high off the ground and are easy prey. Converters can be cut off your vehicle within a couple minutes. If you hear cutting on your block that just doesn't sound right, try to identify any vehicle you see, get the plate, and call 911 immediately.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

• Always park in well-lit areas

• Purchase a vehicle security system and make sure it's set to trigger with just the slightest motion

• Visit a local muffler shop and have the converter secured to the vehicle's frame with hardened steel welded to the frame

• Check out the different types of catalytic converter theft deterrent systems at your local auto parts store or online

• Do not confront the offenders; call 911 immediately

• Report any suspicious individuals or vehicles by calling 911 immediately

o Suspicious vehicles include vans or trucks double parked on a street with the engine running

o Note any license plates of suspicious vehicles (parked in alleys, parked illegally, etc)

o Inform the 911 call-taker that you are calling about a suspicious person in an area with numerous thefts

• If you are a victim of this crime, always make sure to make a police report. This lets the police know that this crime is happening which alerts them to focus attention on the area. If arrests are made, they can also sometimes tie some of the cases together, which can result in a harsher punishment.

Sponsor the 2025 Shop for Schools Fundraiser!

Help the LRVCC Give Back October 8–10

Be part of something big! Sponsor the 2025 Shop for Schools Fundraiser, coming to Lakeview and Roscoe Village October 8–10 — where community, commerce, and education come together.

This three-day shopping event drives customers into local stores, where participating retailers pledge to donate 15% of in-store pre-tax sales to local schools. Shoppers choose which school to support, and the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce (LRVCC) will contribute an additional $6,000 to the top six fundraising schools.

Sponsorship can include:

  • Logo placement on the Shop for Schools website
  • Logo and website link in the event newsletter
  • Inclusion in all printed marketing materials
  • A dedicated social media post(s) from the Chamber
  • A sponsor blurb with link sent to all participating schools after the event
  • Category exclusivity to help you stand out

Last year’s funds supported classroom supplies, playgrounds, library books, teacher grants, and student needs. Your sponsorship helps local schools and promotes your business — all while building community. To sponsor or learn more and to become a sponsor, contact Julie at Julie@lrvcc.org before August 15th.

In response to sudden terminations or withdrawals of long-standing federal arts and humanities grants, the City of Chicago has launched the DCASE Arts Relief Fund. This emergency grant program offers one-time grants ranging between $10,000 and $25,000 to eligible nonprofit arts and culture organizations that serve Chicago residents and have experienced federal funding losses in 2025. The new fund ensures continued access to vital cultural programming across the city, with priority given to organizations previously awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), or other affected federal agencies.

Applications open Aug 1 - 20th.

New Veterans' Benefits

The Veterans Assistance Commission of Cook County announced changes to veteran benefits. To learn more about their services, click here.

  • Qualified Veterans can now receive a $100 payment toward a past-due cell phone or land line bill (which can be used once every twelve months), as well as a separate $100 payment toward a past-due internet bill (again, which can be used once every twelve months). These additions help ensure uninterrupted communication and access to essential online resources.
  • They have improved their Hygiene Assistance program. Veterans can now access this support once every six months instead of just once a year.
  • The Food Assistance Program now gives veterans two $100 Aldi gift cards, along with an additional $100 gift card for each dependent and spouse. This doubles the food support available directly to Veterans.
  • In response to rising housing costs, they’ve also increased our Rent and Mortgage Assistance cap from $1,400 to $2,000. This allows Veterans to fully cover more substantial past-due bills and avoid potential housing crises.
  • Lastly, they've raised their Funeral and Burial Benefit from $1,500 to $3,000, ensuring that no Veteran family has to struggle to provide a respectful and dignified farewell for their loved one.
