DAY BY DAY

A Message from Our Executive Director

Dorothy Day House provides temporary housing and support for families — and sometimes that support looks like advocating against the barriers that stand between a family and permanent housing.

This month, we want to talk about evictions.  In Shelby County, nearly 30,000 evictions are filed annually (more than double the national rate), and over 140,000 have been filed since 2020. Of the families who stayed at DDH in 2025, 52% came to us with a prior eviction on their record. Once evicted, families face denied housing applications, unsafe living conditions, and the very real threat of homelessness.

The DDH staff works alongside private landlords who are willing to rent to parents who have taken time here to regain stability. We are also able to provide financial rental assistance to former families on an as-needed basis — keeping them housed rather than allowing the cycle of homelessness to begin again. Because we take time to build trust with parents, we can walk with them through their plans and support them as they get back on track.

This work is only possible because of donors like you.  NINETY FOUR donors give to DDH monthly – gifts ranging from $5 - $350, just over $6,000 per month. This covers utilities and part of our internet bills – keeping the lights on and families connected while they rebuild.

Will you consider becoming a monthly donor and joining our new Day by Day Circle? While all gifts make an impact, this consistent support allows us to keep showing up — every day, for every family.

Village Voice Spotlight

Tenikki Sesley joined our Family Workshop this week to speak with families about mental wellness, motherhood, and the critical role of support systems in navigating parenting.

Her work spans over 20 years in family advocacy, including service with the TN Department of Children’s Services and ongoing support for mothers experiencing postpartum depression and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

At Dorothy Day House, we are grateful for partners like Tenikki who help create space for healing, learning, and community care.
