Dear Friends,

Every day, families are changed forever because of drunk, drugged, or distracted driving. Our mission is simple: save lives by changing dangerous driving choices and promoting realistic solutions and programs through education, advocacy and partnerships.

October 16 is National Do Not Disturb While Driving Day. We Save Lives proudly joins with the National Distracted Driving Coalition to promote "a life-saving feature that is already integrated into every smartphone. Do Not Disturb While Driving settings block calls, texts and other notifications while you’re driving, and help keep you focused on the road ahead. Our goal is to encourage individuals to turn on their phone’s DNDWD feature. We also encourage employers to implement policies that will ensure their employees are distraction-free while driving on business."

We Save Lives

One Simple Change: How 'Do Not Disturb' Can Save Lives

In 2023, distraction-related crashes killed 3,275 people and injured over 324,819 in the U.S. Eight percent of fatal crashes, 13% of injury crashes, and 13% of all police-reported traffic crashes were reported as distraction-affected in 2023.

Young drivers (ages 15-20) had the highest proportion of drivers involved in fatal crashes who were reported as distracted. I believe, along with other safety advocates, that the number of crashes and deaths is much higher.

We Save Lives Acts Against Distracted Driving

In 2016, we initiated a petition drive asking Apple to add a “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature.

Our activism was rewarded when Apple introduced the "Do Not Disturb While Driving” in the fall of 2017. This feature was designed to automatically mute calls, texts, and other notifications when the iPhone detected the motion of a car to reduce distracted driving. To learn more visit WeSaveLives.

Before starting your car, set your phone to Do Not Disturb While Driving. Many phones have this built in—use it to eliminate temptation.

■■■ Policy Update: A new state bill Pennsylvania's Paul Miller's Law prohibits drivers from holding cellphones or other electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle. The law is named after Paul Miller, a 21-year-old who was killed in a car crash by a distracted tractor-trailer driver. Read more about the tireless efforts of his mother, Eileen Miller. Celebration of Life 🪽

Margay was an extremely bright child. She wanted to be a fighter pilot and more importantly she wanted to be a Blue Angel.

When she was in 8th grade, she was riding home on her school bus when the bus stopped to let some students off. Just then a distracted semi-truck driver who was using his cell phone ran into the back of Margay’s bus at approximately 60 miles an hour. The bus was on fire and I knew that something was terribly wrong. The rescuers were unable to remove her from the burning bus. That is how she died, lying on the bottom of the bus, unable to be rescued and all because someone chose to use their cell phone while driving.

If anyone is tempted to talk or text on their phone, please think of Margay lying on the bottom of that school bus.
