November 2023

Have a small household appliance or toy that needs fixing? Then the Fix-it Clinic on November 18th can help you. Register and tell us about what needs fixed. Space is limited and we are also looking for volunteers to help with repairs.

Also coming up this month is the DIY Candle Making happening at all locations. The MakerSpace will also be hosting a needle tatting class in two parts. Week one we will learn the basics and week 2 we will try to make something. Needle tatting is easier than shuttle tatting. Future classes are to be schedule for the branch locations at a later time.

3D printed house in Wapakoneta

Ohio has its first 3D-printed house being built right now. It is located in Wapakoneta and will be available to rent after it is completed. Co-owner of Sustainable Concrete Innovations, Anthony McMichael, was interviewed by the local news and mentioned that the house will take 4 days to print, but will still utilize trade skills to be completed.

The house is printed using a concrete mortar mix that is extruded in a pattern to create the walls of the house. As it is printed spaces for entries, plumbing, power, and other openings are created to allow the house to have all the needed amenities. This house utilizes the printer to make all the walls, but other 3D houses are made in different ways depending on the needs of the builder, customer, or environment the house is being built.

Another house in Detroit utilizes the 3D print method, but the majority of the house inside is framed and drywalled just like a traditional house. This house was also printed in pieces in a workshop and then transported to the building location. Both methods hope to be more cost-effective and speedier ways to build houses for growing populations.

At this time 3D printing may cost more as the field of study is developing and the creation of the robots are being figured out. See the video below to learn more about 3D Printed houses and bust any myths you may have heard about them. Also below you can see videos of the houses being built in Detroit and Wapakoneta.
