Greetings from Courtney

I am extremely excited to join the United Way Manitowoc County team as the new Marketing and Brand Strategy Manager. In this role, I’m responsible for the development and execution of strategic marketing, communications, brand management, and media relations in support of year-round fund raising efforts for UWMC.

I was born and raised in Manitowoc, and am thrilled to have returned to my hometown. My passion continues to be working to strengthen this community, so I am energized to serve in this capacity. It’s an exciting time for UWMC, and I look forward to working with this remarkable team as UWMC continues to transition in a new direction, focusing more on community building and engagement.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Communications Arts degree. Following graduation, I won the title of Miss Wisconsin 2016, a title within the Miss America Organization. I spent my year of service promoting my platform, “Open Books, Open Opportunity: Promoting Literacy in Our Communities” and serving as a goodwill ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. While travelling almost 35,000 miles across the state, making over 200 appearances, I provided thousands of free books to students and worked with countless elementary schools, public libraries and literacy organizations, including many in Manitowoc County. Following my year as Miss Wisconsin, I moved to the Madison area to continue my career. There, I worked at a social media agency, managing multiple national clients’ social strategy, content creation and community management. Most recently, I was the Marketing Specialist at Greenway Station Shopping Center in Middleton where I developed and executed the center wide marketing strategy.

I look forward to working with the UWMC team to fight for health, education and financial stability of every person in Manitowoc County.

Early Connections & Literacy Impact

Snack Packs Project
For a Company Day of Caring, CNH Industries in St. Nazianz assembled 60 snack packs, which included an age appropriate book, snack, water bottle and community resource material.

These packs were delivered to Valders Elementary School, and distributed to children who do not bring a snack from home.

There are a variety of reasons as to why some kids come to school without a snack, and the snack packs allows them to be included in snack time, with no questions asked. Additionally, because those children are not going hungry, they will be better equipped to stay focused on learning, socializing and growing.

International Literacy Day
This month United Way celebrated International Literacy Day which, since 1967, has marked the importance of literacy as both a matter of dignity and human rights.

Literacy is key for children’s success, but also lifelong success. Research shows that children who read proficiently by third grade are more likely to graduate from high school, and as a result, better able to stay out of the justice system, secure a job with a livable way, and live a longer life.

This is why one of the issues United Way Manitowoc County is focusing on is Early Connections & Literacy. We’re working to increase community understanding about the importance of birth-to-three interactions and connections with caring adults. Additionally, with the development of United Way Born Learning® trails throughout Manitowoc County, opportunities for children to interact with caring adults in a fun and active way is increasing.

Sixty-one percent of children from low-income families have no children's books in their home. Through our partnership with Reach Out and Read ® , we collected board book donations to distribute to children in the county.
