RETAINWORKS: The Kansas Department of Commerce, in partnership with all five Local Workforce Development Boards in Kansas, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Ascension Via Christi Healthcare System and four additional Healthcare systems, has been awarded $21.6 million for a Phase II demonstration grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The RETAIN grant will test the impact of early intervention strategies that improve stay-at-work/return-to-work outcomes of Kansans who experience work disability while in the workforce. The condition may be attributed to either on-the-job or off-the-job factors.

Central to the project is the early coordination of healthcare and employment-related supports and services to help injured or ill workers remain in the workforce. These supports and services include: training in occupational health best practices for participating healthcare providers, active involvement of a Return-to-Work Coordinator throughout the medical recovery period to facilitate continued employment, enhanced communication among workers, employers and healthcare providers, accommodations and job modifications and retraining and rehabilitation services.

Kansas was one of eight states to pilot the RETAINWORKS Program Phase I which began in south central Kansas. Earlier in the year The Kansas State Council of SHRM provided a Letter of Support to the Kansas Department of Commerce for Phase II of the RETAINWORKS grant application. As more information becomes available on this grant, it will be shared with Kansas SHRM. Please check out this link for more information on this program which will be rolled out across the state - https://workforce-ks.com/programs/retainworks/

“This cooperative agreement is funded by the United States Department of Labor and the Social Security Administration to the Kansas Department of Commerce in the amount of $21,600,000 of which $14,543,706 has been provided. 100% of grant funding is from U.S. Federal Funds.”
SHRM Foundation has officially launched the HR-Registered Apprenticeship Program (HR RAP), the first national HR apprenticeship program!

Powered by SHRM's competency-based certification program, the HR RAP is designed to develop untapped talent and upskill incumbent workers for the HR Specialist role through a "learn and earn" experience. This on-the-job training paired with classroom learning leads to higher productivity and increased retention. Apprentices will be prepared to earn the SHRM-Certified Professional credential, giving them the skills they need to deliver results to your organization and an opportunity to progress in an established career path. DOL Requests the Help of HR Managers
Submitted by Jenny Locanthi, SHRM-SCP

Approximately every five years, O*NET (sponsored by the Department of Labor) updates their database of profession descriptions. This is incredibly important to ensure adequate data collection that keeps public government occupational databases up to date. I think it's important that our HR community has input into the description of the HR manager position. If you are interested in contributing, please see the information below, and contact Jim Rose if you have any questions.

Dear Colleagues:
The O*NET Data Collection Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, is seeking the input of expert Human Resources Managers. As the nation's most comprehensive source of occupational data, O*NET is a free resource for millions of job seekers, employers, veterans, educators, and students at www.onetonline.org.
You have the opportunity to participate in this important initiative and your participation will help ensure that the complexities of your profession are described accurately in the O*NET database for the American public.
O*NET Description of Human Resources Manager: Plan, direct, or coordinate human resources activities and staff of an organization.
You are considered an Occupation Expert if you meet the following criteria:
·        You have at least 5 years of experience with the occupation. This time can include supervising, teaching, or training, if you have at least one year working as a Human Resources Manager during your career.
·        You are currently active in the occupation (practicing, supervising, teaching and/or training) and based in the U.S.
If you meet these criteria and are interested in participating, please contact Jim Rose at RTI International, the O*NET data collection contractor (jrose@onet.rti.org or 919-926-6584).
Please provide the following:
·        Name
·        Address with city and state
·        Daytime phone number
·        Email address

Process and Participation Incentive:
A random sample of experts responding to this request will be invited to complete a set of questionnaires (paper or online versions available). Experts who are selected and agree to participate will receive $40.00 in cash and a certificate of appreciation from the U.S. Department of Labor.

We encourage you to consider helping to keep information about your profession accurate and current for the benefit of our colleagues and the nation. A random sampling of volunteers (that have replied to this or similar requests) will be contacted later this year with instructions for participating. Please feel welcome to share this opportunity with others who may be able to contribute valuable input into this position profile.
Thank you for your support!
