This past summer, I read a book called “The Anxious Generation” By Dr. Jonathan Haidt. (https://www.anxiousgeneration.com/book)
In this book, the author spells out many years of research and the reason why mental health in teens is on the rise. Although there are many reasons that contribute to anxiety and depression, it’s very clear that phones and social media access from students have a huge influence on this mental health crisis. I know it’s not news to many parents, but it is eye-opening to see the data from research confirm what we were all suspecting.
This is why, although it is not a major change, we are moving towards a Phone-free experience at 4:12. We know this will help with the hard-to-manage distraction that phones are, allowing them to focus on relationships, community, and spiritual growth for at least the 90 minutes they take part at 4:12.
Students can keep phones in their bags/pockets in “silence mode” or turn them in at the beginning to avoid distraction. If students need access to their phones due to planned or unforeseen circumstances, they can always let a leader know, and permission will be granted according to the need.
We ask parents for their collaboration, as the goal of this approach is to benefit your children and help them grow in their faith and community.
