With Earth Day approaching…

  • Plant tree species native to the area.
  • Be sure to plant your tree in a suitable location to ensure longevity.
  • Mulch is a great way to maintain moisture for the roots of a tree.
  • Be careful not to overuse mulch as it can suffocate the tree roots.
  • Do not place mulch against the stem of the tree as it can cause rot.

Kitty Donohoe is featured Saturday in first Performing Arts Center concert since 2019

Michigan Emmy award-winning songwriter Kitty Donohoe performs at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center Saturday, April 20th at 7pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and can be purchased online or at the door.

Kitty was born into a large, creative family outside of Detroit and has been ‘making up’ songs for as long as she can remember. Describing her music as ‘folky, bluesy, Irishy, American, Canadianish’, she draws from her roots to create music that is uniquely her own. Music that is “haunting, melodic, and literate”  according to All Music Guide, her songs are entertaining to audiences of all ages. With a love of language, an innate sense of melody, and the soul of a storyteller, she backs herself on guitar and cittern.

“This is the first HSPAC sponsored performance since October 2019,” says Performing Arts Center Director Hannah Bianchi. “And I am so excited that Kitty Donohoe will be performing here in Harbor Springs.” Hannah’s history with Ms. Donohoe goes way back to the early 2000’s when she and her family would listen to her album Bunyan and Banjoes on cassette tape. Filled with songs inspired by Michigan history and the Great Lakes, including “Great Lakes Lights,” “Maple Syrup,” and “Mackinac Bridge,” Kitty’s album has withstood the test of time and remains relevant and captivating. Although she will incorporate some of her early songs in Saturday’s concert, you can expect to hear a range of songs from her impressive 50+ year career.

On Friday April 19th, Kitty will also be presenting her “Bunyan and Banjoes” program to the Harbor Springs second graders and her “Lighthouses and Legends” program to the third and fourth graders. Along with being an accomplished musician, singer, and performer, Ms. Donohoe is also a children’s author and incorporates her books into her school programs.

“The Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center hopes to continue to offer community performances.” says Bianchi. “There will be a survey at Saturday’s performance to gauge interest and gather input on what the community would like to see at the HSPAC. Please join us for a wonderful evening of music and storytelling.”

The concert will be held at  Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center at Harbor Springs High School, located at 500 N Spring St.
