| | Help Keep Our Students Safe: Store Firearms Securely | |
Our police partners have asked us to help raise awareness about the importance of safe firearm storage by sharing the following information from the School Safety Network.
Studies show that properly stored firearms can prevent tragedies. Here are a few noteworthy facts:
- Suicide: Over 80% of children who die by gun suicide used a family member’s firearm.
- School shootings: In PreK-12 incidents, over 80% of shooters accessed guns from a family member.
- Accidental injuries: Safe storage reduces the risk of unintentional harm to children and teens.
Please take time to secure any firearms at home. View the image below for tips, and for even more view this Safe Firearm Storage Sheet.
|
Also, please talk with your child about the importance of speaking up about any threats of violence through any of the following methods.
- Inform a trusted adult immediately.
- Call 9-1-1.
-
Use Safe School Helpline to share any concern with our administrators. While anonymity is always an option, we encourage students to share as much detail as possible so that we may thoroughly and appropriately investigate the situation. Links to Safe School Helpline can always be found on any of our school websites.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. Together, we can protect our children.

| | Elementary Orchestra Hits a High Note | This week, students in CCSD93’s Elementary Orchestra program performed spring concerts at their future middle schools! Fourth graders impressed with Old MacDonald, Beethoven’s Ninth and more, while 5th graders dazzled by playing Frere Jacques, Rigaudon and others. Congratulations to our budding musicians! | | Plot Twist: Elsie Johnson Student Ideas Published! |
Last year, author Jennifer Hayes visited Elsie Johnson and sparked the creativity of 3rd–5th graders with a Create-a-Character workshop. Then-3rd graders let their imaginations soar, inventing unique fictional beings with special healing powers.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Hayes returned to inspire this year’s 3rd–5th graders, sharing insights into the writing process and reading excerpts from her latest book, Andy’s Space Friends. In a delightful surprise, she revealed to the now-4th graders that their idea had become a defining trait of the KMEs, characters in the newly published story.
