The Pennsylvania Quintet, the faculty woodwind quintet of the School of Music, presents a concert in honor of the ensemble's 30th anniversary. The program includes a composition commissioned from Philadelphia-based composer Andrea Clearfield. Titled "Compass Kaleidoscope," the work is based on five quilt patterns chosen by each individual member of the quintet. The composition will be performed with projections of the quilt patterns, and a realization of the quilt by Lois Durran will be displayed.
Other works on the program include Pennsylvania composer Daniel Dorff's "Cape May Breezes". The public is invited to join the quintet for a reception immediately following the concert. Former members of long standing include Eleanor Duncan Armstrong, flute, Smith Toulson, clarinet, and Barry Kroeker, oboe.
Composer Andrea Clearfield will be a guest of the School of Music April 9-12. Her residency will include coaching and working with student chamber ensembles who are playing her compositions, and a concert featuring these works will take place on April 11 at 8:00 p.m. in Eisenhower Chapel.

Julius Caesar
Staged on the steps of Old Main, this production will be set in a contemporary African nation ("Rome") in order to draw parallels between modern African dictatorships and Shakespeare's Roman Republic of 44 B.C. under the dictatorship of Julius Caesar. The idea that a dictator is pulled down by "honorable men" only to plunge the nation into a bloody civil war is the common thread in several African states and is essentially the same idea that drives the play Julius Caesar.
Julius Caesar was killed by assassins on March 15, 44 B.C. Abraham Lincoln was killed by an assassin's bullet on April 15, 1865. In recognition of the two anniversaries, a special performance of Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait will be presented by the Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra prior to the Friday evening performance of Julius Caesar. The collaborative presentations will address themes such as protecting the union, winning the peace, misuse of power, tyranny, fear, division of state, and healing.
