RFID MANDATE FOR CATTLE IN NY

As of November 5th, RFID tags will be mandated for cattle in New York State. This includes dairy, beef, steers, heifers, calves etc. Below is some information from Ag and Markets to help you out. If you have questions reach out to Ag and Markets or the State Vet in your area. Sharing this information now, so your youth will be ready for the next show season.

Notice for New York Cattle Producers

Beginning November 5, 2024, there will be only one USDA-official tag type approved for cattle. USDA’s final rule for cattle ID requires all official tags applied to cattle after November 5, 2024 to be both RFID and visually readable. Read frequently asked questions about the final rule here.

New York State will no longer be supplying silver metal National Uniform Eartagging System (NUES or ‘brite’) tags for use in cattle or swine when our current supply is finished.

New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets received a limited supply of 840 RFID-capable ear tags for distribution to New York Producers, Dealers and Markets through USDA Traceability Funding in Federal Budget year 2024-2025. We have distributed all of these tags for this federal year in advance of the November 5, 2024 implementation of the new USDA cattle traceability rule. We anticipate additional supply in April 2025 and will update our order forms when we have tags available.

Record sheet for RFID Tags. There is a requirement to record the placement of RFID tags and maintain those records for 5 years. For those that would like a non-electronic option to log that information, here is a template to use. https://agriculture.ny.gov/.../01/eartaglog_singleowner.pdf

Producers will need a PIN (premises identification number) to order tags. If they have received tags from our office before, we likely have a PIN on file for them. We can provide it to them. If they need a PIN, please share this attached document (PIN FAQ tags.pdf) with them. We can also create a PIN for them.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
