National 4-H Congress and Conference Application
National 4-H Congress and 4-H Conference Application Deadline:
August 1, 2023
The National 4-H Congress and Conference application deadline is fast approaching. These are two leadership experiences our older 4-H youth can apply for. This summer, as you see your 4-H teens, 4-H families, and 4-H volunteers, please encourage them to explore these opportunities. Thanks to the ND 4-H Foundation there is very little cost to our ND 4-H delegates. The possibility of attending National 4-H Congress or Conference is part of what keeps our teen 4-H’ers engaged and involved.
Visit: the National Leadership Opportunities Folder located here: Google Folder
This Google Folder contains the:
o National Congress and Conference Presentation
o PB827 National Leadership Opportunities
o PB828 National 4-H Congress & Conference Application
*Please note, that the application needs to be signed by and Extension agent from the 4-H’er’s county. All materials need to be included in one e-mail from either the applicant or their County Extension Office. Thank you.
Contact Rachelle Vettern or Liz Fox Cameron for more information.

EYC is a Success!
Thank you to everyone who encouraged youth to attend, drove youth, chaperoned, presented, or helped in any other way at the Extension Youth Conference. It takes a village to have youth on campus for a week.
Tucker Regner (Cavalier County), EYC Overall, and Alex Lahlum (LaMoure County), EYC Program, both put together some great activities, workshops, and fun events. We played live “Clue” which could be a great activity for your clubs or camps. Watch for an upcoming webinar to learn more! We were excited to add career tours to the event this year which was a huge success.
Breana Kiser, Dickey County Agent, facilitated a fun Fishbowl entrepreneur activity that got youth thinking outside the box. Emily Leier (Emmons County), April Berntson (Cass County), Heidi Marxen (Hettinger County), and Katie Thompson (Walsh County) were amazing chaperones! Come join them next year!
We welcomed Rudi Wendel of Cass County and Jerrett Kihne of Traill County as newly elected Ambassadors. Hannah Nordby, outgoing co-advisor was honored with the Honorary Ambassador award. She was an integral part of the Ambassador program and will be missed. Applications for new Ambassadors are due October 15 and the selections process will be held at ND 4-H Camp on November 18, 2023.
A fantastic service project was developed by Ambassadors, Alyssa Thomsen and Allyson Bryn both from Barnes County. The youth created 75 birthday cake kits that were delivered to Great Plains Food Bank for distribution across the state.
EYC will be held next year on June 17 – 20, 2024. We hope to see many more youth there!

Need New Ideas?
As clubs are gearing up for the new 23-24 year, they might need some new lesson ideas. 4-H.org has tons of great curriculum that delves deep into subjects. But don’t forget about the free resources for stand-alone activities found on the site that teach about science, social/emotional health, civic engagement, sewing, and more! If you have never or it’s been a long time since you logged on, you are in for a treat. The 4-H.org website is brand new. You and your volunteers should have your own login to get the most benefits.
4-H at Home has many lessons to download for free. Once you are logged in, you can search by topic, grade, activity type, and duration. There you will find directions to make a Calming Meditation Jar for youth who might be worried about a sick relative, school starting, or a test. Youth who would like to learn about aerospace can go on a Space Quest Exploration. Or, maybe youth want to make friendship bracelets with cool patterns from the site.
Make your account and start finding great ideas today!
P.S. There are lots of professional development resources here too!

Healthy 4-H Club Applications Due August 15th
As you work on your 4-H Club year activities, consider having your club be recognized as a healthy club. We also encourage you to involve the teenagers in the club as teen leaders for the younger members in the healthy club activities. We will ask them to complete a short survey and they will receive a special incentive item.
To be recognized as a Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club, clubs should complete at least one nutrition or fitness activity during at least six meetings (or club events) in six or more of these areas: 1) setting, 2) roll call, 3) program, 4) demonstration; 5) recreation, 6) refreshments/snacks, 7) community pride, 8) field trip/tour, 9) family mealtime challenge and 10) healthful snack policy.
Here are some tips for club leaders:
-
Access the files (leaders guide, member handout). Visit https://www.ndsu.edu/agriculture/extension/healthy-4-h-club to find the Health 4-H Club information. Be sure to click on “Explore More” for the member and leader guides.
- See the “Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club Idea Guide” for ideas from other clubs.
- Discuss the program with club members. Brainstorm ideas and make plans.
- Consider electing a “Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club committee” to coordinate the club’s activities and keep records. This program provides excellent leadership and activity coordination opportunities for club members, especially older youth.
- Encourage members to demonstrate healthy recipes or adopt a “healthy snack” policy for club meetings.
- Contact county Extension offices for educational materials available for clubs to use. For example, an “Eat Smart. Play Hard.” trunk is available for checkout.
- Track club activities on the recording sheets.
- Develop a display or scrapbook of your club’s activities to show at your county fair. Don’t forget to take pictures of activities throughout the year.
-
Submit your recording sheet by August 15 to your county office. Clubs will be recognized in a statewide press release, and participating 4-H members will receive a certificate and incentive item.
If you have questions, please contact Julie Garden-Robinson by calling
(701) 231- 7187 or e-mailing [email protected].

Vaping: Small Devices, Big Impacts Curriculum
Rates of e-cigarette use among teens are increasing at an alarming rate. Many teens are unaware of the physical and psychological risks that are associated with vaping. This curriculum developed by Meagan Hoffman, Katelyn Yliniemi, and Reganne Engebretson, is for middle school aged youth (11-14). If you send the completed participant evaluations to Meagan Hoffman, data can be entered and a report can be created that can be used for county impact statements or success stories.
The curriculum can be found on the ND 4-H Youth Development Google Drive. Click on the Programs tile and then you will find the Vaping Curriculum folder. Inside the folder you will find:
- Activities Handout
- Activities Handout Answer Key
- Lesson Plan
- PowerPoint Presentation
- Participant Evaluation
- Teens and Vaping: What Caring Adults Should Know About Electronic Cigarette Use (publication YD1944)
