Get to Know Christy Walker, Office Manager

This month we’re highlighting our new Office Manager, Christy Walker .

Christy serves on the management team at Orcutt and helps us improve the efficiency of our firm’s operations.

She also helps to ensure that clients receive the best customer service possible, focusing on the company values of quality, proactivity, and relationships.
“The goal is for my role to oversee firm administration including client and project management and billing and receivables. I will also oversee firm production in terms of new client onboarding, bookkeeping and payroll support, and tax and year end production,” adds Christy, who explains that the role will also continue to grow and evolve into other areas as well in the future.

Keep reading to see what Christy enjoys most about her role so far—and how she spends her time outside of work.

What do you enjoy about your role? I really enjoy learning a new industry and trying to learn all I can to be the great resource in my role. My absolute favorite part of the position, however, is the people I get to work with on a day-to-day basis from the team to our clients.

I was looking for an organization that had a clear vision, mission and values and I have truly found that here at Orcutt.
What’s something clients might be surprised to learn about you? Something that often surprises individuals is that I am a Veteran of the United States Army.

How do you spend time outside of work? Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and my three dogs who are all rescues—Max, Teddy and Lily—and I am definitely your stereotypical crazy pet parent.

I enjoy exploring Cincinnati since it is still fairly new to me since I moved here from Chicago in June of 2016. I love to travel, anything involving music, and working out.

70s, 80s, 90s: Which decade do you love the most and why? Definitely the 80s–talk about a no brainer! From the music, bright colors, out-there fashion and the movies…I’m a true child of the 80s and I’m pretty sure I’d be ok going back to that time period!
Time for a Tax Tune-Up

Right now is a great time to review several things so you can ensure a year that minimizes your taxes.

Here are a few strategies to start with, if you haven't done so already:

Business Review

If you haven’t already, come in and see us for a review of your business and the tax implications that come with. That might include looking at whether or not you qualify for different tax treatment, taking advantage of all tax deductions possible, strategies if you operate on a cash basis, making sure you are up to date on tax law changes, and much more.

Retirement Contributions Review

The IRS classifies many retirement plans as “qualified,” meaning there are certain tax advantages to investing in them. Contributions made to a 401(k), SIMPLE or Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan are taken from your check pre-tax, meaning they are tax-deferred.

If, for example, you’re in the 32% combined income bracket, you pay $320 of income tax for every $1,000 earned and not contributed to the plan. Same goes for a traditional IRA if you qualify by income.

Health Savings Account

If you have a Health Savings Account and you don’t max contributions, you’re missing a good deal. HSA contributions, potential growth and withdrawals made for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. You can continue to take distributions for healthcare expenses from this triple-tax-free savings vehicle in retirement, too.

Retirement Distributions & Further Planning

Another area to re-visit: your retirement plan. If you are retired and drawing income from multiple sources, you’ll want to do so in the most tax-efficient way. As long as you keep in mind that distributions from qualified plans must begin by age 70 1/2, it often makes sense to first withdraw money from taxable investments and accounts in order to let money in qualified plans continue to potentially build tax-free.

Incidentally, a Roth IRA doesn’t require minimum distributions, so you can let that grow as long as you want. Every person has a different scenario, and we're here to help you plan for what's best for you.
