Write out your business plan. Great things happen when you "put pen to paper." A proper plan can help conceptualize your vision, prove to lenders and investors that you have a solid foundation, and will almost certainly save your time and money. You can take SBA's free online How to Write a Business Plan course, meet with an advisor, or take our 'Business Planning & Pricing' class to explore business planning options.

Explore your funding options. Figuring out how you are going to fund your business is often just as important as the concept behind the business itself. We can tell you about options including SBA's variety of funding options, from microloans to 7(a) and 504 loans. To get started securing an SBA-backed loan you can use Lender Match, SBA’s free online referral program, connecting small businesses with more than 800 participating SBA-approved lenders.

Create a marketing strategy. An effective marketing strategy will help get customers talking about your products or services. The SBA’s online Marketing 101 training course is a great place to start and we have expert marketing advisors that will work with you one-on-one. Topics covered include identifying target market, conducting market research, establishing a marketing plan, and social media marketing.

Get a second opinion from an expert. Navigating the startup process in the recovering economy can be tricky. That is why a business mentor is so valuable. The Town of Scottsville is using state and federal grant funds to support business growth in vacant spaces downtown. Weekly classes will be facilitated by the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CVSBDC) to help aspiring entrepreneurs build their business plan. Completed plans will serve as grant applications.

New Form 1099 for Tax Year 2022.
If you earn more than $600 via online payment platforms you will start receiving a Form-1099-K, “Payment Card and Third-Party NetworkTransactions” (TPSOs and EPFs). This information is being sent to you and the IRS. Therefore, you may receive several of these forms. Business-related income received by 3rd party processors such as Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, Zelle, or other vendors, will be providing these forms. Also, if you sell products via Amazon, Etsy, eBay, or at craft shows or face-to-face, they will receive the 1099-K.
This change in legislation was included in the American Rescue Plan, enacted in March 2021. This is a substantial change from prior periods, in which the 1099-K would only be generated when the amount paid to a single payee exceeded $20,000 per year and if there were more than 200 transactions during the same period. This change means that “gig” workers and individuals that rent out residential/vacation properties and collect payments via 3rd party vendors will, for the first time, receive the 1099-K document, and in some cases, will create a taxable event for recipients.
Transactions for gifts, charitable contributions, and reimbursements are excluded
from this requirement.
