"Habitat Was My Only Hope": How Critical Repairs Saved Yvonne’s Home
Several years ago, Yvonne’s HVAC went out. She could not afford to replace it, so she made do with a space heater in her bedroom in the winter and a window unit air conditioner in the summer.
In the summer, most of the house was so stifling hot that Yvonne, who is disabled, could barely breathe. In the winter, the house was freezing cold everywhere outside her bedroom. “I was wearing layers and layers of clothing,” Yvonne recalls. “I got a couple more space heaters because I was worried the pipes would freeze, but then my electric bill was $500 to $600 a month. I couldn’t afford to pay it. It worried me a lot.”
Moreover, part of Yvonne’s kitchen was not functional. Her family had started working on a renovation but ran out of money before replacing the stove and the sink. Then her son had a heart attack. So Yvonne got by with a microwave and an oven and washing her dishes in the bathroom sink, which began backing up.
The stress of it all was almost more than she could bear, but she felt strongly that she wanted to stay in her home. “I prayed for something to happen. I didn’t know what,” she said.
