The 41st Annual FASS Conference in Jacksonville, Florida, October 12-14 was a resounding success!

FASS is a state chapter of the National Organization for Student Success (NOSS). Be sure to renew your NOSS membership to remain connected with a network of higher education professionals across the country. Hurricane Ian caused havoc in Southwest Florida mere weeks before the conference. As a result, a number of conference registrants were unable to attend because of the extensive damage caused by the storm. FASS is collecting donations that will be sent directly to state/community colleges affected by the storm: Florida Southwestern State College, South Florida State College, State College of Florida, Valencia College, Daytona State College, and Seminole State College. The FASS Board was honored to welcome its keynote speaker, Dr. Meredith Sides, president of the National Organization for Student Success, to the conference. Her presentation, "The Joy of the Work, Despite Its Rollercoaster Vibes," was informative and inspiring.

The conference featured excellent concurrent sessions with topics such as academic success coaching, equity, and pedagogy in math and reading instruction. Sam DeZerga presented a highly informative session about Tallahassee Community College's award-winning academic success coaching program.

Susan Wessner, developmental math professor from Tallahassee Community College, received the gavel of leadership and was installed as FASS president by Sharisse Turner, FASS/FDEA past-president.

FASS President Susan Wessner installed the 2022-2024 executive board: Elaina Lommason, president-elect; Jean Marshall, secretary; Sharisse Turner, treasurer; Kathleen Ciez-Volz, member-at-large; Lynne O'Dell,member-at-large; Tiffany Lewis, member-at-large; Billie Jo Dunaway, member-at-large. Additionally, Elizabeth Smith, immediate past-president of FASS, will serve on the board as an ex-officio member; Youlanda Henry will serve on the board as an ad hoc member.

The FASS Outstanding Educator Award Recipient

Dr. Sharisse Turner

Dr. Sharisse Turner, dean of Transitional Studies at Tallahassee Community College, received the Outstanding Educator Award at the FASS conference. Sharisse's career in higher education spans over 35 years. Prior to becoming an administrator, she taught developmental writing and reading. Her career has focused on supporting underrepresented, underserved students. She holds an AA degree from Chipola College, a bachelor's degree from the University of West Florida, an MA from Tallahassee Christian College, an MS from Walden University, and an EdD from Baylor University.
