Property Tax Exemptions
Property tax exemptions are savings that contribute to lowering a homeowner’s property tax bill. The most common is the Homeowner Exemption, which saves a Cook County property owner an average of $973 dollars each year.
The automatic renewal of some exemptions due to COVID-19 has ended. This means that those receiving the "Senior Freeze" and Veterans with Disabilities Exemptions must reapply this year.
To determine which exemptions are currently being applied to a residence, homeowners can review their Property Details, then review the Exemption History and Status section to determine which exemptions they received.
New homeowners and those that need to reapply can do so by completing the online application.
If a homeowner believes they are entitled to exemptions in previous tax years, a Certificate of Error application can be filed to redeem past savings. *Click Here* to learn how to file.
Please Note: Exemption deductions only appear on the Second Installment Property Tax Bill.

Alderman Napolitano Passes Historic Legislation
Over the last three months Alderman Napolitano passed two historic pieces of legislation. On December 12, 2022, the full Chicago City Council passed Alderman Anthony Napolitano’s Chicago Criminal Accountability Ordinance. This legislation allows Chicago Police Officers the authority to issue a municipal violation to criminals caught in illegal possession of a firearm. The violation carries a fine of up to $5,000 for the first offense or up to 90 days in jail. A second offense carries a fine between $10,000 and $20,000 or up to 180 days in jail. These violations are issued in addition to State charges. Gun violence has wreaked havoc on our city. The States Attorney’s revolving door approach has done nothing to punish criminals. This Ordinance forces criminals to answer to the City of Chicago when the State’s Attorney lessens or drops State charges.
On January 18, 2023 Alderman Napolitano's Vape Ordinance passed the full City Council. Alderman Napolitano worked with his aldermanic colleagues, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, and our local community to pass this much needed legislation to protect our children and curb the explosion of vape stores throughout our communities. This legislation now requires a special Vape License when a business’s vape product sales exceed 20% of their total revenue. It also implements a 1,000 foot distance restriction between retail vape stores as well as any retail tobacco store. Finally, this ordinance doubles the fines for tobacco sales to minors to a range of $2,000 to $10,000. Alderman Napolitano was honored to have the support of the American Lung Association and the Respiratory Health Association on this ordinance.

Neighborhoods throughout Chicago have been negatively affected by online, temporary home and room rentals. These online rentals are on the rise and may pose a threat to our community by facilitating pop-up parties and illegal activity. These "hotel-houses" may also have a negative impact on property values. The quality of life in our neighborhoods is paramount and we need your help banning these "hotel-houses" on your block and throughout the 41st Ward.
