Bordeaux Elegance Meets Spanish Flair

Quick background story:

Jean-Claude Berrouet became the first permanent winemaker at Chateau Pétrus when he was in his early 20's, recruited by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1964. He oversaw 44 vintages there.
Berrouet was also called in to help launch the Moueix family’s Californian venture, Dominus, in 1982, helping to produce its first vintage in 1983.

Many vintages of Petrus under Berrouet are among the world's most revered and most expensive wines.

He retired from Château Petrus nearly 10 years ago. Perhaps Berrouet retired too young, as he has since become a global wine consultant.

Bodegas Yllera in Ribera del Duero, Spain, is one of his clients:
He's known for making wines of subtlety and nuance that are considered the counterpoint of Michel Rolland.

This is the genre-blending value 'goldilocks' you never knew you wanted:

It's satisfyingly deep and luscious, yet confoundingly also vibrant, fresh, precise, and elegant at the same time.

Any lover of fine Bordeaux, Super-Tuscan, Rioja, Napa, or elsewhere, will want several cases for everyday/anytime drinking.

All my best,
—James Tran
2016 Bodegas Yllera 'Jesus Yllera'
Ribera del Duero, Spain

93 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The current 2016 Jesús Yllera is floral and perfumed and is evolving nicely and absorbing the oak, coming through as both elegant and powerful, with fully developed flavors and a polished palate. It's sleek and balanced.

It's a Tempranillo-based blend with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that matured in French and American oak barrels, 50% of them new, for one year. It shows a departure from the rusticity of the past into the elegance, perfume and balance the best Tempranillo is able to offer. It's textured and perfumed, the quality of the tannins has improved tremendously and it finishes clean and long. Drink 2021-2026." -Luis Gutierrez (6/30/21)

93 Points Tim Atkin, MW:
"Jesús is the big brother of Pepe at Yllera in wine terms, with 10% Cabernet and 2% Merlot adding structure and complexity to the sweet red fruit of the Tempranillo. Wild herbs and oak spice add further layers of flavour. 2022-28."
