Hi neighbors,

On Monday, I was sworn in to a new term alongside Mayor Johnson, Treasurer Conyears-Ervin, Clerk Valencia, and the full City Council. The challenges facing Chicago can feel daunting —reducing community violence in an immediate and holistic way, embracing structural solutions to our City’s fiscal problems, and tackling the growing climate crisis, to name just a few. I remain profoundly grateful to work with and for our dynamic 47th Ward community to meet these and other challenges head-on.

My office and I are continuing to work closely with our new 19th Police District Councilors to support new arrivals to Chicago. In addition to coordinating the regular delivery of food and personal items, we’re continuing to work with other community leaders to connect our new neighbors to health care and housing services. You can find information about how to pitch in here.

Earlier this week, I joined 40th Ward Ald. Vasquez and the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce at their annual State of the Neighborhood event. Topics ranged from business priorities in the new term and transportation improvements to public safety needs and updates regarding critical development and infrastructure improvements. I also visited Lake View High School to attend an art exhibit that showcased students’ fine and performing art. It definitely brought me back to my days as an aspiring jazz saxophonist!

In addition, I met with several undergraduate students from Northwestern University to review data regarding the City’s single-use plastic bag policy. The students highlighted the fact that plastic bag use has steadily increased in recent years; the environmental impact of the manufacturing of plastic, paper, and reusable bags; and a half dozen different policies the City could adopt to reduce residents' use of single-use plastic bags.

I hope you all have a restful weekend. If you're looking for something to do this Saturday or Sunday, consider swinging by Tiny Fest—a two-day outdoor festival at the North Center Town Square featuring local musicians, local vendors, kids' activities, and terrific food.

Yours in service,

Government Services and Information

Our office has been receiving many inquiries regarding ways to assist the new arrivals in Chicago. Currently, we have a number of migrants who are staying at the 19th Police District Station while they are waiting for further city services. A group of community leaders have been organizing assistance for these migrants. They have coalesced much of this information at a website here. A few ways to assist are below:

Meal Delivery: Sign up here to deliver ready meals to the station for either breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Donating and Sorting Supplies: This is a list of the most needed immediate items for the migrants. You can drop them off at our office or at Lakeview Lutheran Church, 835 W. Addison from 4-7 daily.

Financial Support: The Lakeview Lutheran Church is organizing a fundraiser to raise money to supplement donations so that migrants can have the resources that they need. Additionally, organizations such as Refugee ONE and Centro Romero have also been working tirelessly to work with the migrants. Please feel free to visit their websites about ways you can support their ongoing work.

Volunteer Onsite: Volunteers are needed, especially those who can speak Spanish, and can sign up here.

If you are interested in further opportunities to assist with the migrants through our office, you can sign up here.

RefugeeOne is looking for affordable, family-sized apartments to rent in West Rogers Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. We'll be renting 20+ units every month this spring and summer!

This is no small task — can you help?

Most urgently, we're looking for a two-bedroom rental for a Congolese family of 5 by early next week. In the following weeks, we'll welcome four Syrian families, an Afghan family, a Sudanese family, and more.

If you have connections to rent an affordable apartment near Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood, let us know at [email protected]gRenting to refugees offers a life-changing opportunity for families eager to rebuild their lives.

RefugeeOne prepares furnished apartments for all newly arriving refugees. Leases are signed in refugees' names so they have a place to call their own and can start building independence (and credit history!) right away.

Street and Alley Resurfacings

Over the next several weeks, the Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be paving this year’s first batch of alleys and streets funded through Ald. Martin’s annual infrastructure fund. Once crews grind (remove) the existing asphalt, they will spend about 10 days adjusting the height of manholes, before they return to put down the new layer of asphalt. Daytime parking restrictions will be in place during that process. For alleys being paved, garages and trash cans will remain accessible. The initial list of blocks includes:

  • Hermitage from Ainslie to Winnemac
  • Leland from Ashland to Paulina (in advance of the Leland Greenway construction)
  • Hoyne from Grace to Byron
  • Wolcott from Bradley to Grace.

The initial list of alleys includes:

  • The alley bounded by Clark, Argyle, Janssen, and Ainslie
  • The alley bounded by Ashland, Wilson, Sunnyside, and Paulina
  • The alley bounded by Damen, Leland, Lawrence, and Winchester
  • The alley bounded by Ashland, Cornelia, Addison, and Marshfield
  • The alley bounded by Wilson, Sunnyside, Greenview, and Ashland
  • The alley bounded by Wolcott, Wilson, Winchester, and Sunnyside

Revere Park Construction

Construction at Revere Park is coming to an end. The Park District aims to have the northwest baseball field opened to the public by Memorial Day. The fieldhouse is expected to be open in June, in time for Summer Programming. As a reminder, Summer Programming registration is now underway, including for Revere Park. Program offerings starting June 26th at Revere Park include Day Camp and Camp Junior Counselor as well as Photography and Drawing & Painting. To sign up, go to www.chicagoparkdistrict.com and click on Programs and Memberships.

Irving Park Brown Line Pedestrian Improvements

Starting next week and into late July, CDOT crews will be repairing and improvements concrete on Irving Park between Wolcott and Ravenswood. The work will include removing and replacing damaged concrete roadway and curbs, as well replacing damaged pedestrian ramps at Irving Park & Ravenswood. Crews will also construct curb extensions on either side of the crosswalk under the El tracks, to narrow the crossing distance and improve safety for commuters using the crosswalk.

Belmont Resurfacing and Complete Streets Project

Crews have removed the old asphalt on Belmont between Western and Kedzie and put down the first of two layers of asphalt. Over the next few weeks, utility and manhole heights will be adjusted and damaged areas will be patched before a second layer of asphalt can be put down. At the same time, crews will spend approximately 6 weeks making repairs to the bridge over the river. which require permanent lane closures reducing traffic to 1 lane in each direction on Belmont between Campbell and Rockwell. In addition, the northbound lane on Rockwell will be closed between Fletcher and Belmont, with all northbound traffic on Rockwell diverted to Fletcher.

North DuSable Lake Shore Drive Resurfacing

The Department of Transportation is repaving portions of DuSable Lake Shore Drive:

  • northbound DLSD from LaSalle Dr to Lawrence Ave, and
  • southbound DLSD from Lawrence Ave to Irving Park Rd.

Crews will work extended evening and overnight hours, in addition to off-rush daytime work, to complete the work by mid-June. All lanes in the southbound direction will be fully reopened to traffic during the morning rush period and all northbound lanes will be fully reopened to traffic in the afternoon rush period. You can view an updated construction schedule weekly by clicking here.

Ravenswood Metra Station Construction

Metra has pushed back their station opening date to July. This delay is due in part to supply chain problems (which have delayed delivery of structural glazed tile), and in part to the need to address some leaks and hairline cracks in the new platform before the it is open to the public.
