Notice to Residents

Portions of Old Noise Walls to be Removed on I-495 North Between Georgetown Pike and George Washington Memorial Parkway Starting Late Feb. Through April

Old noise walls to be replaced with upgraded, new noise walls as part of 495 NEXT project

I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) Project

Beginning in late February 2023 and continuing into April 2023, 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project work crews will remove two sections of old noise wall (depicted on map in orange) along I-495 North between Georgetown Pike and the George Washington Memorial Parkway including:

  •  An approximate quarter-mile long section closer to Georgetown Pike

  • A section closer to the George Washington Memorial Parkway that is approximately a third of a mile long

Once the old noise walls are removed, crews will grade and prepare the area for construction of new outside lanes.

Portions of old noise wall to be removed

Some noise wall removal activities will occur during overnight hours for safety reasons. With certain stretches of old noise wall located adjacent to I-495, multiple lanes of the Beltway must be closed to enable safe removal. Cranes will lift and stack the old noise wall panels, and then the panels will be transported off-site. Please note that schedules could change if the weather is bad.

In the coming months, old noise walls will also be removed in some additional locations along the 2.5-mile 495 NEXT corridor.

New, upgraded noise walls will be built to replace the old noise walls that are being removed.

This work is necessary to extend the 495 Express Lanes from the current terminus near the Dulles Toll Road to the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The 495 Express Lanes extension is scheduled to open in late 2025, with overall project completion in mid-2026.
