NOTICE TO RESIDENTS NEAR LIVE OAK DRIVE BRIDGE IN MCLEAN

Daytime Pile Driving for New Bridge to Start as Early as Thursday, October 19 Day-into-Evening Paving of Balls Hill Road Planned for Tuesday, October 24

October 13, 2023

What's Happening?

  1. As early as Thursday, October 19, daytime pile driving will start for the west (near Langley Swim Club) side abutment of the new Live Oak Drive Bridge over I-495. Pile driving is anticipated to continue during daytime hours for approximately 10 business days.
  2. Paving of Balls Hill Road is scheduled to occur on or about Tuesday, October 24 during daytime and evening hours, resurfacing the section of the road that has been excavated to install a new Fairfax Water line. This paving work is expected to be completed in one day.

What Should Neighbors Expect?

Pile driving involves hammering steel piles into the ground to support the foundation of the future bridge. When active, neighbors will hear hammer strikes every few seconds. Pile driving will occur only during daytime hours, Monday through Friday.

During paving operations, neighbors can expect to hear the engines and mechanical functions of heavy equipment. The noise produced by asphalt pavers is approximately the same loudness as a carwash.

All construction work is dependent on weather conditions and other factors.

What Happens Next?

In late 2023 or early 2024, crews will drive piles at the new Live Oak Drive bridge's east abutment. Subsequent work includes completing the abutments and relocating utility lines. Next, bridge beams will be lifted into place over the Beltway, an activity that must be performed during nighttime hours so the highway below can be closed to traffic for safety reasons. The deck and remaining elements of the bridge then will be constructed.
