NOTICE TO RESIDENTS WEST OF

LIVE OAK DRIVE BELTWAY BRIDGE IN MCLEAN

Extended Work Hours on Live Oak Drive Planned to Start Monday, April 15; Crews Working to Implement Mid-May Traffic Shift Before Swim Club Opening

April 12, 2024

Following a winter of extraordinarily heavy precipitation – December 2023 through March 2024 witnessed double the rainfall (18.6 inches) of the prior two years’ average for the same months (9.3 inches) – crews will work extended hours on and near Live Oak Drive beginning as early as Monday, April 15 through mid-May 2024.

What are the Extended Work Hours:

Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Saturday.

Why are the Longer Hours Needed:

Extended hours are necessary for the project to shift west a section of Live Oak Drive (adjacent to the Langley Swim and Tennis Club and three adjacent residences to the north) in advance of the Club’s swimming pool opening on Friday, May 24.

Adjacent to the Langley Swim and Tennis Club, an excavator lifts a segment of drainage pipe (April 5).

What Work Will Occur:

  • Installation of remaining drainage
  • Installation of retaining wall panels adjacent to southern entrance of Swim Club parking lot (not immediately proximate to residences and occurring during the project’s standard overnight hours between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.)
  • Excavation and grading of area where Live Oak Drive segment will be shifted
  • Installation of curb
  • Installation of foundation of shifted Live Oak Drive segment
  • Installation of final pavement for Swim Club entrances, adjacent neighbor driveway, and private Live Oak Drive
  • Installation of pavement markings of shifted Live Oak Drive
  • Shifting of traffic to new pavement

What Can Neighbors Expect:

  • Lighting units when work is occurring after daylight (crews will make every effort to direct lights away from residences, though some light pollution will be unavoidable)
  • Periodic back-up alarms on trucks, which are required for safety
  • Periodic reduction of Live Oak Drive to one lane, with flaggers deployed to alternate the direction of travel; neighbors should allow extra travel time in case of delays
  • Excavators and small bulldozers performing excavation and grading
  • Concrete mixer trucks delivering and deploying concrete
  • Trucks delivering and deploying stone and other foundation materials
  • Trucks delivering and crews laying asphalt

Other Nearby Impacts:

  • Separately and occurring during overnight hours (but with limited direct impact on Live Oak Drive residents), crews will start lifting and placing steel girders for the new Live Oak Drive bridge on Friday, April 12.
  • Additional girder lifts are planned during overnights next week, Monday, April 15 through Thursday, April 18.
  • Multiple lanes will be closed on I-495/Capital Beltway with intermittent traffic stoppages.
  • Virginia State Police cruisers with blue-and-red lights flashing may be visible from Live Oak Drive as they carry out traffic control duties on the Beltway.
  • Planned to start April 19 and continuing for approximately one month, daytime pile driving for two new ramp overpasses connecting the George Washington Memorial Parkway and I-495 may be audible to Live Oak Drive residents.

The 495 NEXT project appreciates the Live Oak Drive community’s patience as this work is performed, and is committed to completing it as efficiently as possible.

Construction plans are subject to change due to weather, utility relocations performed by outside companies, resequencing of work to facilitate on-time completion of the overall project, and other factors.
