Coming Soon: The Big Beam Weekend

495 NEXT Crews to Install Large Bridge Girders for New 495 Express Lanes Ramp

As part of the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project, crews will install five steel bridge girders spanning 295 feet in length over northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) at the Dulles Corridor Interchange for a new 495 Express Lanes ramp. This work is scheduled to occur over the weekend of January 24-27, 2025, and will require major traffic impacts on northbound I-495 near Tysons and at the Dulles Corridor Interchange.

During the weekend-long operation, traffic on northbound I-495 will be reduced from six lanes (four general purpose and two express) to two lanes and shifted to the 495 Express Lanes for about a one-mile stretch near Tysons. Traffic shifts and lane reductions will be in place for approximately three miles beginning at the Route 7 interchange until just past Lewinsville Road.

Additionally, the ramp from eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Dulles Airport Access Highway to northbound I-495 and westbound Dulles Toll Road under I-495 will be closed and detoured. Work and traffic impacts will begin at 9 p.m., Friday, January 24, with all lanes and ramps reopened by 5 a.m., Monday, January 27. Work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if necessary.

How Drivers Can Prepare:

Travelers are urged to stay away from northbound I-495 near Tysons the entire weekend of January 24-27. If travel is necessary, please choose an alternate route or plan additional time and expect delays. As always, drivers are urged to slow down, use caution and follow signed directions and detours. Enhanced police presence will be in place throughout the construction area.

Beltway Traffic to Shift onto New Outside Lanes in 2025

Project on track to open new express lanes in late 2025

In spring 2025, I-495/Beltway travelers in the 495 NEXT corridor will experience something new. Instead of driving on the current lanes that have been in service since this stretch of the Beltway opened in 1962, motorists will ride on newly constructed lanes that are being built on the outside of the current Beltway alignment. The traffic switch for both north- and southbound I-495 will be implemented in phases, as sections of the new, outside lanes are completed.

Since 495 NEXT construction began in March 2022, crews have been working to widen the footprint of the Beltway to accommodate four new express lanes, and a two-mile bicycle-pedestrian path from Lewinsville Road to Live Oak Drive.

Work has included clearing, removal of noise walls, relocation of utilities, installation of new drainage, and extensive earthwork to enable the new outside lanes to be built. Additionally, nearly half of the new and/or replacement noise walls are now installed.

Once traffic is shifted onto the new outside lanes, crews will turn to building the new express lanes in the center of the Beltway.

Concurrent with work on the Beltway, major progress on replacing three bridges across I-495 has taken place.

  • In August 2024, the new Live Oak Drive Bridge was completed and opened to traffic, and the retired, old bridge was demolished.
  • Also in August 2024, the first half of the new Georgetown Pike Bridge was finished and opened to traffic. Demolition of the old bridge was completed in October 2024. The second half of the new bridge is slated for completion in late 2025.
  • During late summer and fall 2024, the new Old Dominion Bridge began to take shape, with the installation of concrete girders (that support the bridge deck) and concrete bridge deck pours that were completed in late November 2024. The new bridge is planned to start carrying traffic in early 2025, followed by demolition of the old bridge.

For safety reasons, noisy bridge demolition involving jackhammers and crushers breaking up and hauling away concrete deck, abutments, and piers requires the closure of multiple lanes on the Beltway, which can only be implemented during nighttime hours when traffic is lightest.

As noise walls continue to be installed and work shifts to the center of the Beltway, work will be moving farther away from surrounding residences, schools and places of worship; however, neighbors should expect possible continued impacts. Impacts may include overnight and weekend work, as well as lane closures.

Following the opening of the express lanes in late 2025, remaining construction elements are expected to be completed in mid-2026.

Under the Hard Hat Profile

Romelia Belteton

Senior Field Engineer

Lane Construction

Q: Can you tell us about your role at Lane Construction and how you support the 495 NEXT project?

A: As a field engineer, I oversee the work of the Erosion and Sediment (E&S) crew. My role includes ensuring the crew has the proper materials they need to maintain the requirements for E&S control, as well as tracking the costs of their work.

Additionally, I manage the concrete subcontractor, who is responsible for all concrete median barriers and constructing the curbs and sidewalks for the project. I also organize all pavement markings and new lane striping on the roadway. This includes knowing where the lines need to be placed and making sure things fit together, which is particularly important for traffic switches.

My other tasks include reviewing our five-week construction look-ahead to see if any scheduling conflicts exist, tracking changes and quantities, and scheduling upcoming work that falls within my scope.

Lastly, I manage the underdrain crew, and toward the end of the project, I will oversee all landscaping within the project right-of-way.

Q: What have you enjoyed most about working on 495 NEXT?

A: I enjoy working with my team and appreciate the positive relationships we’ve built. The welcoming environment fosters open communication, making it easy to ask questions and learn from each other.

Q: What is the best piece of career advice you have received?

A: The best piece of career advice I’ve received is to be confident in your skills, not shying away from new opportunities or opportunities in leadership. Those opportunities are helpful to sharpen your skills and grow. Also, it’s important to take notes and plan ahead when possible.

Q: What unique qualities do you bring to the project team that have aided the success of the design-build team's partnership?

A: I feel like what I bring to the table is trying to maintain a positive attitude and foster open communication. Open communication is important no matter who you are talking to. Construction is fast paced with a lot of challenges, but I come to every situation with a positive attitude. I do not allow things that are challenging to change my attitude or how I communicate, especially with my team and our subcontractors.

Also, I am adaptable. I am willing to make schedule adjustments (such as working at night) to meet schedule demands.

Q: What are career highlights or milestones that have helped you progress to your current role?

A: I’m still early into my career, but I would say so far, my biggest highlights have been the completion of all the traffic switches. I am particularly proud of the work we completed on Georgetown Pike. It was great seeing how everyone came together to complete the project. It was so rewarding to see the job being completed with fresh pavement and intersections changed, so we can see the work moving ahead to the next phase of the project.

Transurban Fall 2024 Community Grant Program Awards

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project is extending the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project is providing new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall along Live Oak Drive in the vicinity of the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange, environmental improvements including stormwater management facilities and funding for stream restoration at Scott's Run, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in late 2025.
