A: As a field engineer, I oversee the work of the Erosion and Sediment (E&S) crew. My role includes ensuring the crew has the proper materials they need to maintain the requirements for E&S control, as well as tracking the costs of their work.
Additionally, I manage the concrete subcontractor, who is responsible for all concrete median barriers and constructing the curbs and sidewalks for the project. I also organize all pavement markings and new lane striping on the roadway. This includes knowing where the lines need to be placed and making sure things fit together, which is particularly important for traffic switches.
My other tasks include reviewing our five-week construction look-ahead to see if any scheduling conflicts exist, tracking changes and quantities, and scheduling upcoming work that falls within my scope.
Lastly, I manage the underdrain crew, and toward the end of the project, I will oversee all landscaping within the project right-of-way.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working on 495 NEXT?
A: I enjoy working with my team and appreciate the positive relationships we’ve built. The welcoming environment fosters open communication, making it easy to ask questions and learn from each other.
Q: What is the best piece of career advice you have received?
A: The best piece of career advice I’ve received is to be confident in your skills, not shying away from new opportunities or opportunities in leadership. Those opportunities are helpful to sharpen your skills and grow. Also, it’s important to take notes and plan ahead when possible.
Q: What unique qualities do you bring to the project team that have aided the success of the design-build team's partnership?
A: I feel like what I bring to the table is trying to maintain a positive attitude and foster open communication. Open communication is important no matter who you are talking to. Construction is fast paced with a lot of challenges, but I come to every situation with a positive attitude. I do not allow things that are challenging to change my attitude or how I communicate, especially with my team and our subcontractors.
Also, I am adaptable. I am willing to make schedule adjustments (such as working at night) to meet schedule demands.
Q: What are career highlights or milestones that have helped you progress to your current role?
A: I’m still early into my career, but I would say so far, my biggest highlights have been the completion of all the traffic switches. I am particularly proud of the work we completed on Georgetown Pike. It was great seeing how everyone came together to complete the project. It was so rewarding to see the job being completed with fresh pavement and intersections changed, so we can see the work moving ahead to the next phase of the project.
