Mayor Johnson's Summer Book Club books
You Can Help!

Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson has established a partnership between the city and the Norcross Cluster School Partnership (NCSP) to create a program intended to motivate kids to read this summer.

"Literacy skills are closely linked to the probability of having a good job, decent earnings and access to training opportunities," he explains. "Our teachers set rigorous standards for reading during the school year - keeping those skills fresh during summer vacation puts the kids that much ahead when they return to school in the fall."

The Mayor hopes to motivate children to check out books on their summer reading list, but first the club needs more books.

4,000 books have been donated so far for the Summer Book Club and we anticipate another 4,000+ to come in over the next several weeks.

We need to get the books ready to be used by the students this summer. Volunteers are needed to help place library card pockets in the books, as well as to color-code them for the appropriate age.

We will meet at a building near City Hall. Volunteers needed to work two-hour shifts:
  • Mondays & Wednesdays: 10AM - Noon or Noon - 2PM
  • Saturdays: 9AM - 11AM or 11AM - 1PM
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Pastor Terri Hoye:

Connect Students Minister to Homelesshomeless

On Sunday, March 30, 14 students and four adults from Connect Student Ministries served sandwiches, lemonade and a personal favorite - Tang, to over 100 homeless people.

We spent the afternoon talking, listening and praying with people from the streets of downtown ATL.

It's beautiful to watch as two different worlds collide in the name of Jesus Christ.

To see our students stepping outside the boundaries and into lives that are so different from their own is just amazing.

We had the fun, God got the glory ...

Pray for Pastor Saeed Abedinisaeed

American Pastor Saeed Abedini remains in a hospital room instead of a prison cell.  As we reports in mid-March, Pastor Saeed was taken from Rajai Shahr Prison to a hospital where he has received and continues to receive medication.

Family members reported that a physician actually examined him yesterday. He is still suffering from internal injuries he received in prison.

There's no word on how long Pastor Saeed will remain hospitalized. Family members who were able to visit with him this weekend said it's clear the time he has spent in the hospital is a significant improvement over how he was being treated in prison.

According to his family, he is receiving meals and medicine - but the much-needed surgery to address internal injuries has not yet occurred.

We continue to pray for Pastor Saeed - that his health will improve and that he will be re-united with his wife and two young children who live in the United States.

We also remain hopeful that in addition to getting the medical care he so desperately needs, that Iranian officials display the kind of humanitarian treatment that often accompanies the start of the Iranian New Year which began on March 21. This is the time of year when the Iranian government frequently offers clemency to prisoners of conscience.

As you know, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif recently told the media that clemency for Pastor Saeed could be possible. It is our hope and prayer that such action occurs. It is a critical time to stand in support of Pastor Saeed. Pray for him. Sign the petition for his freedom at BeHeardProject.com.

Share his critical plight with everyone you know.

It is time for this 33-year-old U.S. citizen to come home. It's time for him to be reunited with his wife, Naghmeh, and their two children, Rebekka and Jacob.

News from The Mission Societyms
As we approach Easter, President Dick McClain urges a fresh look at Matthew 28, offering that there is an interesting pattern here, a message for Jesus' followers-all of us. Let's be sure to not "subcontract" this privilege to missionaries or pastors, Dick says. It's for all of us. Practice this in a conversation this week. See what God does.
