Do you have a favorite month?

I’ve always loved February. My mom’s birthday was February 17th and we always took a full day trip (Northern Bay Area – Sonoma County) usually up or down the coast; she loved all flowers, but the flowers of spring are something special and inspiring. We would pull over and just enjoy a huge field of the bright yellow mustard in bloom, there were always comments on the daffodils that popped up along the side of the road, and we both loved how green everything was (Sonoma County’s primary color is brown most of the year). She especially loved seeing the baby lambs though. She would get quiet and I think at times she would wander back in time and remember growing up on their farm, and that they always brought the baby lambs in the kitchen at night during hard winters. My mom passed a few weeks before Thanksgiving in 2012 but every February I miss her the most; I miss those trips so much and I miss driving and reaching over and just holding her hand.

February comes from the Latin word februa and it means “To Cleanse.” That’s what it has always felt like to me, the month that is truly free and clear of whatever crap the year before might have bogged us down with. Better than January, it was always more of “ok, now what” kind of month. I hope February will be special for you too, a time to start looking at seed catalogs, planning a trip, or just committing the month to make time for the important things in your life.

If you love our beautiful planet, I invite you to bring the family to the 4th Annual Social Awareness Film Festival this month. Our planet should be at the top of the important list for all of us.

Wishing you a bright and beautiful month!

With Aloha,

Jill
