WEEKLY RECAP!
February 4, 2019 to February 10, 2019
Below is a quick recap from week four as your 4th District County Commissioner. You can follow me in real time on Facebook here
Top Story - Citizens Advisory Board Development
As the newly elected Commissioner for the Fourth District, it is important for me to create a regular monthly meeting to address all concerns and comments that may directly impact the citizens of District 4. I am always available and will post updates via social media but wanted to develop a Citizens Advisory Board to create a place where a group of citizens can be heard on a monthly basis. Our first meeting will be an informational meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. on March 11th in the Jury Room of the Courthouse, 525 N. Main. There is plenty of parking in the parking garage. Please enter through the north door.

This is your opportunity to learn more about the Citizens Advisory Board. The monthly meeting location may change for April.
County Highlight - Exploration Place
This past week I was delighted to take some time to go EXPLORE at Exploration Place. I wanted so desperately to just play but Jan and John insisted I listen to all that is going on. And boy do they have A LOT going on!

If you haven't taken your youngster to learn and explore... Do it. I was truly amazed at all this place has to offer.

A big thank you to Jan Luth and John Mosley for the informative tour.

One cool exhibit currently being featured is “Licensed to Spy”. In this exhibit, participants gather intelligence on a group of suspects and build a case to determine the likely culprit. It's very interactive and the set is designed to make you feel like a real detective. Very cool.

On a side note, Exploration Place is a private 501(c)(3) not-for-profit institution governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. Through a partnership with Sedgwick County, Exploration Place currently receives support and is recognized as the Sedgwick County Science and Discovery Center. Exploration Place is also supported by admissions, memberships and voluntary contributions from the public, area businesses and foundations.
Business Spotlight - United Vybez Culture & More
Nova and I stopped in to see Autumn Black at her store United Vybez Culture & More, located at 2003 E. Central. Autumn and Ras Black have created a very unique space full of handmade items. If you haven't made it by there... go!

In addition to their business, they also run "Books & Breakfast". This is a community initiative, focused on literacy and cultural awareness. It is free to the public and everyone who attends gets free breakfast and free books. This event is supported with your participation and/or donation. This Saturday's event is being held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the French Quarters Club House, 1504 N. Kansas. For more information, call (316) 312-3966.

Loads of great work being done in this community! A big thank you to Autumn and Ras Black for commitment to service.
Mom Moment - Nova June turns 10 today!
Let’s just say this about parenting… it’s not easy but it has its perks. My youngest daughter, Nova June, continually amazes me. She is kind, compassionate and completely comfortable in her skin. She is fearless and continues to impress me with her confidence. Her sassiness and strong willed nature drive me crazy but I wouldn't try and change her for the world.

I'm excited to see where the next 10 years takes her. I am confident she will grow into a great leader.

This girl of mine wanted some “swoop bangs” (a new haircut) and to go see the new Spider-Man movie for her birthday. I’m so thankful she is easy going. We made both happen and had a great time!

Happy Birthday, Nova June. I love being your mom!
This Week's News
Last week you may have noticed the commission unanimously voted to start the process of hiring Tom Stolz as our next county manager. This week we are hosting a meet and greet on Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. for the public to come and meet Tom. We are hosting this special event at the Sedgwick County Zoo's Cargill Learning Center.

I, for one, am very excited about Tom and the leadership he brings to the table. Please join us this Wednesday to ask any and all questions you have from all commissioners about our decision to move forward. This is also your chance to meet Tom if you haven’t already done so. Looking forward to seeing you all.
