5th and 6th Grade SCIS Parents,
I grew up in West Michigan and my family who still lives there will often taunt me during the summer about how wonderful their summer temperatures are. Today I get to gloat a bit as the windchill in Zeeland, MI is -37 degrees. Today, Mary and I let them know how thankful we are to live in Texas today!
The next few weeks are packed with important dates and deadlines connected to setting up for a smooth transition for your child to the next grade level. I hope each of you will watch the video above to get some important details about the events listed below.
DUE Today!! Thursday, January 31st (see video above)
Due date for 6th Grade Perot Field Trip. We apologize, late registration will not be allowed. All students and parent volunteers should sign up and
pay online on the SCIS website by January 31st.
Friday, February 1st Parent Coffee:(see video above)
This Friday's parent coffee will be for 4th grade parents to learn more about SCIS!

5th Grade students registering for 6th grade fine arts (see video above)
This process started this week and runs through February 7th. Please see the detailed information below.

5th Grade District Assessments Next Week (see video above)
Next week, our 5th grade students will be taking
district
assessments (benchmarks) during math and ELAR during class. Students should bring a book to read once they have completed the
assessment. We are encouraging students to take their time and make their best effort. We use the results of this test to guide our teaching, reteaching, and tutoring.
Please, be sure your child gets plenty of rest this weekend.
Valentines at SCIS (please....see video above)
To help our students manage valentines day in a healthy way at the intermediate level, we downplay valentines day and work to have a normal day of school. We ask that students do not send flower arrangements/ oversized teddy bears/balloons to school. At the intermediate level teachers do not have their classes exchange cards or notes, but if individial kids want to exchange small valentines notes during lunch that is permitted. Reach out to Mr. Winkler if you have any questions.
Student Organized Talent Show Auditions: (See Video)
For those student groups who have signed up the student organizers are sending out tryout times after school for Friday, February 1st. See video for more details.

Helping one of our own- the Maddox Family: (see video above)
The Bailey family could use our prayers and support for their amazing 6th grade son, Maddox. At this time, the family has requested no visitors but you can help by providing meals using the Care Calendar I have attached. As always, Lovejoy is an amazing place to grow up and the family and I can't thank you enough for your support!
Calendar: 279000
Helper code: 7658
A post from his Maddox's mom Trina. -
1-in-a-million. That's how one of the neurologists described Maddox. His autoimmune response is rare to the general population but not to the hospital who sees many cases like this.
They have narrowed it down to 3 root problems: 1) ADEM; 2) autoimmune encephalitis; or 3) viral encephalitis.
The MRI of the brain shows multiple areas of inflammation all over the brain but is heavily concentrated on the left side. The inflammation of his spine starts below his rib cage and goes all the way up. The neurologist said that was quite unexpected.
The doctors, at Children's that study cases like Maddox's, will be with us around the clock and have provided wonderful care.
Recovery could take up to a year but we know Maddox is a fighter.
The family is exhausted but feels your love and support. It is wonderful to be a part of a community that takes care of each other like Lovejoy does.
With an Attitude of Gratitude,
Ray Winkler
