A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 2:14a,36- 41
Today we listen to the effect of Peter' speech. Some three thousand people respond to Peter' call for reform and are baptized. What does the Bible want to teach you and me with this narrative.
One point may be that we should accept Jesus as "both Lord and Christ." You have already done so at your baptism. But this acceptance is an ongoing process. Is the Lord your guardian and shepherd in your daily life? Can you truly pray: "The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want?"
The Responsorial Psalm is that that we put our trust in Jesus because of his love and kindness and that he has done great things for us, so we should be filled with joy and love for him and to be like him.
in your self-giving. He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. The Lord hears the cry of the poor!
A Reading, From the first Letter of Saint Peter
1 Pt 2: 20b-25
The writer of the First Letter of Peter applies the shepherd theme to the situation of a man afflicted with pain and suffering in order to show us what is the right thing to do. What guidance does the Lord Jesus offer in such a case? The suggested answer is to accept the pain and suffering. Why? Because Jesus has done so!
This general suggestion is not an invitation to accept passively any and all suffering that may strike you. But there are situations in which we have no choice. Hence, is the Lord Jesus the shepherd and guardian of your soul? Do you get on your knees in faithful prayer and supplication?
In the Gospel of John
Jn 10:1-10
We have in this reading a fusion of two parables. The first is a picture of a sheepfold into which two parties seek to enter, a marauder and the shepherd himself. This parable refers to the false shepherd of Israel. The second parable concerns the relationship between the sheep and the shepherd. Oral tradition (preachers telling them for several decades) has fused these two parables together.
Jesus, as seen by the author of John's Gospel, identifies himself with both the gate and the shepherd. Both identifications make the same point. The allegorical interpretation of this combined parable is an addition of the evangelist.
