There are some documents in life you look at when you need to. You study them for exams and then, you may not look at them again until you are older. I hate to think, "I'm older", but I am and recently I was thinking about a date 240 years ago... I picture it to be a warm summer day as is expected at this time of year. When five remarkable men of different backgrounds, and I'm sure differences of opinion, came together to draft a document that would eventually set us free from Britain's rule. On June 11, 1776 Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Roger R. Livingston and Thomas Jefferson gathered together and chose Thomas Jefferson to begin writing. 86 changes were made to the draft before its final revision was approved on July 4, 1776.
These men came together, putting their differences aside and laid the foundation for this beautiful country we call home.
For the first time it was written, "All men are created equal", Governments would be formed among them to represent the people... The Declaration of Independence was written and we became the United States of America.
A year later on July 4, 1777 our independence was celebrated with bonfires, bells ringing, music playing and fireworks!
We have so much to be thankful for and I imagine we will celebrate much the same as we have been for 239 years - family, friends, music, and fireworks.
What a blessed country we live in. Thank you to our brave service men and women who defend our freedoms!
Wishing you all a safe and fun Holiday!
