Nassau County
Bar Association

May 13, 2020

Dear NCBA Members:

I want to thank everyone who joined us last night for the first-ever NCBA Annual Meeting by Zoom. I, however, physically ventured to Domus for the first time since the
lock-down. With the help of our Executive Director Liz Post and Hector Herrera, situated at a safe social distance away, we accomplished everything that needed to be done. Briefly, here are some highlights.

We voted in the new slate of NCBA Officers and Directors, along with the new members of the Nominating Committee and Officers of the Nassau Academy of Law. My heartfelt congratulations to all!

All will receive certificates of appreciation. I especially want to congratulate Robert Schonfeld as the recipient of our NCBA Directors Award for his exceptional job as Chair of the Civil Rights Committee. Thank you so much for all you did, Bob!

We heard from Co-Chairs Marilyn Genoa and Jess Bunshaft
of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee regarding their outstanding work this year, as well as Past President Chair Martha Krisel of the new COVID-19 Community Task Force and Past President Chris McGrath as a member of the new Supreme Court Task Force regarding developments in the courts.

We also enjoyed a special appearance by the (legendary) Hon. Marie Santagata to formally create the “Marie Santagata Gold Gavel Award” which will be given to judges, on an ad hoc basis, for their outstanding mentoring of other judges in the pursuit of justice for all. She donated her special gold gavel pin to the NCBA to be placed on a plaque which will list the names of future honorees. Thanks to Past President Sue Richman for making this happen.
I presented a mock-up of our new Domus history book, entitled “A Toast to Domus: The Legacy of the Nassau County Bar Association.” This incredible book will be available soon on our website, with a print version to follow. This was a project I commissioned several years ago, and with the help of many, including Sarika Kapoor, Jennifer Koo and Ann Burkowsky, it finally came to fruition in the final days of my term. My thanks to all who helped.
Of course, Past Presidents Andy Simons and Joe Ryan presented me as outgoing President with their traditional song ( click here for the lyric sheet ). It was quite a treat, and much appreciated. I hope everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did. It’s truly a privilege to serve this wonderful association.

On a different topic, a lot has changed at the Bar Association since New York went on pause 70+ days ago. The Bar staff is working remotely, and many of you have been taking advantage of the newly created CLE on Demand, and are taking part in the Zoom CLEs being offered by the Academy and our many committees.

The Academy staff, made up of Jen and Patti, have done a tremendous job in providing our members with CLE credits and information in a timely basis. Please be patient with them, and please take a minute to check your spam folders before contacting them for an outstanding certificate.

As a reminder, please send all forms, whether for a CLE on Demand program or a Zoom CLE, to  academy@nassaubar.org . Please DO NOT  send the forms to an individual staff member. By doing so, it will help the Academy to help you.
