HOUSTON - Council Member Fred Flickinger would like to make residents aware that Houston Public Works continues to closely monitor the weather, channels, and lake levels. We are working closely with our partners at Coastal Water Authority, San Jacinto River Authority, Houston OEM, HPD, and HFD.
Lake Houston: Lake Houston is currently at 42.80 feet (normal pool is 42.4 feet) Gates on the spillway dam are open and discharging water over the spillway. Gates on Lake Houston will remain open until Lake Houston returns to normal pool. Total inflows into Lake Houston are at 6,627 cfs and outflows are at 8,960 cfs. Lake Houston gates have and will remain open until the gate that is stuck partially open is repaired. Lake Houston levels can be monitored here.
Lake Conroe: Lake Conroe is currently at 201.02 feet (normal pool is 201 feet). The San Jacinto River Authority is currently releasing 1,590 cfs. Lake Conroe levels can be monitored here.
Forecasted Rainfall for Tonight and Friday:
There is a potentially dangerous flash flood threat late today/tonight north of the metro area, and severe thunderstorms are possible. The weather will impact the region late today through portions of Friday. Rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches will be common north of HWY 105 with isolated totals of 6 inches. These higher totals may result in significant and dangerous flash flooding as this rainfall will fall on top of areas that have seen 15-30 inches of rainfall in the last 2-3 weeks.
Totals between HWY 105 and I-10 will average 1-3 inches with higher isolated amounts and generally less than 1-2 inches toward the coast.
Monitor Official Sources for Current Information:
Please remember it is important to utilize verified news sources for inclement weather information as well as tune in to local news stations for changing forecasts. Harris County Flood Warning System (harriscountyfws.org), Houston TranStar (houstontranstar.org), and the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Forecast Office (weather.gov/hgx).
To monitor current water levels at Lake Houston, visit www.coastalwaterauthority.org. To see current levels for Lake Conroe you can visit www.sjra.net. Please also keep in mind with rain events flash flooding is always possible, stay weather aware and avoid roadways if possible during rain events. It only take 6 inches of water to move a car. Always turn around, don't drown.
Monitor Stream, Bayou, and Creek Conditions: Rain may move repeatedly across the same area, causing creeks and bayous to rise and possibly exceed their banks. Stay informed of current conditions and avoid traveling near creeks and bayous. You can monitor streams and rivers here at the River Forecast Center.
