The End of the School Year is Near; Let's Celebrate

Many thanks to everyone who sent in snack donations to keep our scholars well fueled for exams as we close out the school year! PIE is grateful for all of the support all year long!

TONIGHT: Meet & Welcome the Next Principal of AMHS

It's time to give a great Raptor welcome to Mr. Barrett Reese, who was recently announced as the next principal at AMHS (which followed the announcement that Mr. Perlmutter will be the next principal at Burke High School). All are welcome and invited to attend an evening of conversation, connection, and celebration on Wednesday, May 20, from 6-7 pm in the Bonds Wilson Library. Light refreshments will be served by PIE.

AMHS Students Win National Academic Quiz Tournament's South Carolina State Championship!

We are the State Champions! For the first time in school history, the Academic Magnet High School Quiz Bowl team captured the National Academic Quiz Tournaments South Carolina State Championship! Competing against 24 of the top teams in the state, Cameron Erde '26, Liam Rohrbacher '26, Aaron Zhu '27, and James Oliver '28 battled their way to the finals before clinching the championship in a thrilling sudden-death victory over Southside High School. Special congratulations to Liam Rohrbacher '26 for earning a Top-10 Scorer Award! They are pictured above being recognized by the CCSD School Board.

This incredible accomplishment reflects the hard work of the students and the leadership of co-advisors Ms. Ije Etikerentse and Ms. Kristen Vann. While the Raptors are unable to attend nationals, they are cheering on Lucy Beckham High School as they represent South Carolina at the national competition next week. Best of luck!

Purchase tickets here. All attendees need a ticket. Student-athletes should utilize the complimentary ticket option. Family tickets cover admission for three (3) family members/guests. Additional guests will need an individual ticket.

Senior Awards Night Next Wednesday, May 27

Every senior should attend Senior Awards Night with their family. The attire for this event is more casual than for graduation. We suggest informal to business casual. Additionally, all seniors will receive their bag of honor cords and other senior awards after the program.

Seniors should gather in the lobby of the Black Box (next to the RMMT) at 5:30 pm to walk in together right at 6 pm. Guests should head to the Rose Maree Myers Theatre and be seated. The first few rows are reserved for the Seniors. Seniors should wait in

the Black Box lobby area to walk in together at the beginning of the Awards Night.

Also on Wednesday, May 27: MANDATORY graduation practice will be held at the Performing Arts Center at 1:30 pm.

AMHS Seniors Earn $2,500 National Merit Scholarships

For the second time in as many months, multiple students from Charleston County School District (CCSD) earned scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s (NMSC) 2026 scholarship program. This week, four students, including three from Academic Magnet High School, were announced as winners of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. They are the only public school students in the Tri-County and Lowcountry to earn this honor this year.

The following AMHS students are recipients of the 2026 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship:

  • Mateus Guimaraes
  • Kate Heichelbech
  • Daniel Huang

“The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has identified some truly gifted students in Mateus, Kate, and Daniel,” explained the principal of Academic Magnet Jacob Perlmutter. “I'm so proud to have these scholars among our Academic Magnet alumni and can't wait to see the amazing things that they achieve.”

CCSD now has nine winners in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship program (SIX are AMHS students), as five members of the Class of 2026 earned corporate-sponsored scholarships last month. Read the latest CCSD release at this link.

Register a Team for Soccer Tournament on June 6

Raptors, please consider registering a team for the Chuck Dennis Memorial 5v5 Soccer Tournament. It’s a great chance to come together with the Charleston soccer community for a fun day, healthy competition, and a meaningful cause. Play for a purpose and help create opportunities for young athletes through soccer scholarships generated from the tournament. All athletes will receive free tickets to the Charleston Battery match on June 6. Division winners are recognized during half time of the Charleston Battery. Grab your teammates and be part of it: register, volunteer, or donate at charlesdennisfoundation.org.

Volunteer Opportunities: Help is needed in the concession stand and the event is also looking for a field marshal. A field marshal's simple job involves receiving a scorecard from the scorekeeper, taking it to the referee on the field and returning it to the scorekeeper after the game. Here is a link to their Sign Up Genius.

Check out this local summer opportunity for AMHS Math Students: the 2026 Math Research Experience for Lowcountry High School Students and Teachers. It will be held July 20-24 at The Citadel.  Students will solve math problems in groups of three with a teacher and/or Citadel faculty mentor. Mr. Rappa was a teacher last year for the camp. Mrs. Renes attended final presentations. They are seeking students excited about math with a background in algebra (or more).

If interested, you must apply. See this flyer and the website for more information. Many AMHS students have been attending this experience the last few years and have had very positive experiences.

Senior Raptors who are interested in teaching science or pursuing a post-secondary degree in science, please apply to the Leigh Snelgrove Memorial Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship that goes directly to the school of the awardee. Email Ms. Langley with any questions.

The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund provides up to $10,000 per year in college scholarships for high-achieving South Carolina students with a demonstrated financial need (who will be attending an eligible South Carolina college/university).

We're accepting scholarship applications for the 2025-26 school year from January - May. Learn more and apply now at this link.

Community Service + Activities

Guidance counselors will regularly post opportunities for service on students' Canvas page and those are also sometimes shared on AMHS social media accounts. Students are encouraged to find opportunities for service in their own communities. Additional opportunties that are shared with the Raptor Report are listed below.
