Dear Friend of CCSD93,
More Than a Trash Can: Roy DeShane 3rd Graders Learn Valuable Lessons from Sustainability Project
I shared with you in December how students in Mrs. Erin Baumann's 3rd grade class at Roy DeShane School developed a plan to add an outdoor trash receptacle near their playground after noticing litter consistently on or near the area. It was a real life problem-based learning opportunity that required them to thoroughly think through who would empty it, how to ensure it wouldn't be knocked over, where it should be placed, where they would acquire it, and who would pay for it.

It brought the class to meet with Mr. Tom Wadman, Roy DeShane Head Custodian, to ask if he would have time to empty it along with all of his other duties, and then ultimately to the School Board to request the purchase of the trash receptacle.
This spring, these ambitious, thoughtful students were provided a few options to choose from and had the final say on which trash receptacle would be installed. I'm happy to report that it's now in place. View the video linked below to find out more about their project and the lesson these students learned in what they could accomplish by identifying a problem, setting a goal, making a solutions-oriented plan, and collaborating with the right people along the way!
Introducing CCSD93's Distinguished Innovators!
At last night's Board meeting, the Board recognized 19 licensed staff members who have shown extraordinary dedication to classroom teaching, learning and innovation with CCSD93's new Distinguished Innovator Award. The staff members were nominated by their school principals and reviewed and confirmed by district administrators.

These educators are risk-takers in the classroom who always have students' best interest in mind. They're known among their colleagues as collaborative team players, and they work to align lessons with their School Improvement Plans and CCSD93's Strategic Plan. In addition to their awards, each will receive a stipend that can be used on classroom equipment or professional learning. It's the highest honor CCSD93 has ever given any staff members, and we look forward to more of their colleagues earning the Distinguished Innovator designation in future years.

Middle School Students Visit & Learn From
Local Manufacturers
As I've shared with you recently, this year CCSD93 expanded its 8th grade Shark Tank opportunity in its Information & Media Literacy (IML) classes, giving students the opportunity to develop, design, market, and in some cases create a working prototype of a product or useful invention, and then compete to eventually pitch it to real-life "Sharks" from two local manufacturers that we've partnered with, Core Pipe and Prince Castle. Along the way they received guidance from not only their teachers, but also a real life engineering manager.

On Wednesday of this week, the students in the IML classes got to visit both Core Pipe and Prince Castle to learn firsthand about the manufacturing process. Leaders from both businesses took students on tours of their facilities, including their manufacturing floors, to learn how their products are made from design and inception to finished product. It was a terrific learning opportunity that enabled students to gain real world knowledge from two world-class manufacturers right in their community's own backyard. Students asked excellent questions during the field trip, which aligned with CCSD93's 2018-23 Strategic Plan Goal 1: A Relevant Education for All Students. Special thanks to both companies and to the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce for partnering with CCSD93 on this project.
