message from the ptsa president
New LHS Principal Kim Geer with  new PTSA President  Patty Burgess
The school was abuzz yesterday morning
with special guest visitors. Douglas Tyson, Assistant Superintendent, Region 1, along with Jane Strauss, Fairfax County School Board (FCSB) Chair, and Ryan McElveen, FCSB Member-at-Large, came to Langley to introduce our
new Principal, Ms. Kimberly Greer , to the community. They got an early start so Ms. Greer could meet the faculty in the auditorium before they headed to their classes for the day. Mr. Tyson brought in a group of students to say hello. Then, Ms. Greer was off on a tour of the school with Principal Amico. They ended up at the PTSA meeting in the Choral room where Ms. Greer was introduced to parents in attendance. She told each group that she is excited to join the Langley community and is looking forward to "listening and learning" as she settles into her new role.
Ms. Greer currently serves as Assistant Principal at Marshall High School and supervises the World Languages and Special Education departments. Click here for more detailed  information  about her educational background and career. Her official start date is July 2nd but she will begin collaborating with Mr. Amico within the next few weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
We welcome Ms. Greer to the Langley community and look forward to working with her to support our students and staff.

Lea Holmes is a Spanish I and II teacher at LHS, who is beloved by her students for her bubbly personality and energetic teaching style.  Ms. Holmes grew up in Newport News, Virginia, and attended Christopher Newport University, where she studied to become a Spanish teacher. After college, Ms. Holmes moved to the Dominican Republic.
"I really wanted to be immersed in Latin American Culture, and I was able to teach at a bilingual school down there,"  Ms. Holmes said. While the Dominican Republic was one of her favorite places to live, due to the tropical climate and beautiful scenery.  Ms. Holmes also loves living in Northern Virginia because there are so many interesting places to go and fun things to do.
While she enjoys working at Langley, Ms. Holmes said that it was hard to move from her home in Southern Virginia, because other than her husband, all of her family members live in Newport News. However, a positive of leaving her hometown are the many good experiences she has at Langley.
"I just feel so supported -- it's a community of much support -- so whatever I need, it's always going to be taken care of."

Ms. Holmes said. Her favorite thing about teaching Spanish is hearing positive feedback from her students. A favorite activity for Ms. Holmes and her students is listening and singing to Spanish music. " When I hear them singing down the hallway in Spanish, a song that we went over in class, I really enjoy that."

talking about round 2 of 13 reasons why
Last weekend, Netflix released the second season of the series 13 Reasons Why. T his season includes issues of gun violence, substance abuse, and sexual assault in addition to suicide, all of which is often graphically presented. A number of mental health and youth advocates are warning parents, educators, and professionals that the content of the program, as well as last year's 13 Reasons Why, Season 1, warrants discussion about watching the program at all or watching with teens and discussing afterward.

lhs grad speech became a book
Actress, author and LHS graduate Lauren Graham
Last year's graduation speaker, Lauren Graham, a Langley High School graduate and star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood,
expanded on her commencement speech and wrote a book entitled  In Conclusion, Don't Worry About It

In the book, she reflects on growing up, pursuing your dreams and living in the here and now.

This is a fun, quick read dedicated "To graduates and other hopefuls." A little inspiring advice that could benefit all of us, especially in this season of graduation.
