President's Message
A few months ago I had the pleasure of spending some time in France.  While becoming reacquainted with the amazing architecture and art we learned about in school, I was particularly intrigued by the story of the Eiffel Tower.  I always knew it had been designed as a temporary structure for the World’s Fair in 1889, an event where the world gathered to showcase the latest technologies and creative innovations.  What I hadn’t realized ( or retained?) was the tower was the successful submission from a design competition open only to French nationals to create a grand entry gate welcoming guests to the event.  Part of the design criteria was the materials, technologies, designers and workers were all expected to be 100% French.  Now, more than 125 years later, this iconic structure stands tall and is as impressive now as it must have been so many years ago.

Who will be the next Gustav Eiffel?  Which of you will be featured as part of this year’s inaugural MASI design competition?  Our rules are slightly less stringent, we don’t care about your nationality, nor will we be checking birth certificates of your trades or general contractors and it’s highly unlikely and completely unnecessary for the materials you’ve specified to be 100% Canadian (that would be great though!).  We do limit submissions to members of the 3 provincial interior design associations.  The awards celebration will be in Calgary and we’ve had a great number of submissions we look forward to showcasing.  If you haven’t submitted a project this year, come out and support your fellow members and be proud of the talented design community in western Canada and become inspired for your next project.  While I can’t guarantee who will win, unlike the other design competition, the results won’t be rigged and our judges will not be design team members of the winning entries!  Best of luck to all participants! Enjoy the rest of your summer!
