YOUR SOURCE FOR SUMMER LEARNING NEWS

Issue No. 8
Greetings!
It's already the third week of April, so you can definitely believe us when we say, "Summer is just around the corner." Now is the time to get ready for National Summer Learning Week, July 8-13, 2019.

The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) has created language you can share with your mayor, governor, or local elected leader to make Summer Learning Day, Week, or Month an official celebration in your community!

Show how essential summer learning is in closing the achievement and opportunity gaps in America with this sample proclamation.
Join NSLA on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 for a Summer Learning Advocates Hill Day in Washington, DC. President Trump's proposed budget eliminates many programs that support summer opportunities. We need your presence and voices on Capitol Hill to tell your Members of Congress how important the 21st Community Learning Center program and other federal funding is to the students in your programs and your community. Together, we can make progress towards saving summer for our Nation's youth.
Scholastic Education is excited to join NSLA as an official partner and to inspire the joy of learning all summer long. For more than 100 years, Scholastic has been a trusted leader in literacy education supporting educators, families, and communities. Check out Scholastic's array of research and programs to keep students engaged all summer long:

  • Research in Practice Studies: Two years of research meet new standards of evidence by exploring the impact of providing K–6 students and families with increased access to books and learning opportunities over the summer.

  • Scholastic Read-A-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge: a free program where kids enter summer reading minutes online, unlocking digital rewards as they complete weekly reading challenges; and access book excerpts, videos, and other summer-exclusive content.

  • Summer Learning Programs: Embrace the interests of all students with strength-based instructional programs and summer take-home packs.
The enrollment season for summer programs is well underway. At NSLA, we believe children deserve an amazing summer filled with fun and engaging learning opportunities through quality summer programs that help them thrive year-round.

How do you choose a summer learning opportunity for a child that's both high-quality and fun? NSLA's own Leslie Gabay-Swanston, Director of Program and Systems Quality, begins our summer blog series with 5 Things Parents Should Look for in a Quality Summer Program .
