Meet Our Newest Team Members - Joseph and Sylvia

Joseph Muniz is our newest Americorps Service Member, arriving straight from New Mexico. He will divide up his time between our Fifer Learning Center and our other site at New Brookside to help with our programming, and he will also work with our boys' mentor group. Joseph was inspired to work with youth after a stint in an inpatient Youth Mental Health setting. We're glad to have you on our team, Joseph!

Sylvia Sesay, a George Mason University student intern who is working toward her Bachelor's of Science degree in Social Work. Sylvia will spend two full days a week at Brent Place, our site in Alexandria's west end. Originally from Sierra Leone, Sylvia lives in Woodbridge, VA, and expects to complete her degree in May of 2016. Sylvia brings her expertise of working with children in the after-school setting and will also work with adult residents of Brent Place on meeting their needs. We are thrilled to have someone with Sylvia's expertise at Brent Place and are so happy she chose us!
They're Baaaaaaa-ack!
The new school year is officially underway and that means our after-school programs are off and running too! When our doors opened on September 14, we welcomed 139 kids at our three sites - 84 elementary school students, 36 middle school students and 19 high school kids. We have a waiting list at all three sites for our elementary students and it makes us sad that we can't serve the other students who need us. The good news is that we have room for more middle and high school students and we are actively recruiting for them. As always, we are committed to providing a safe place for our students to learn, grow, and have fun while our tutors help them with homework, math, literacy and more.

Pssssst - and we need more volunteer tutors. Contact us!
Staff and Volunteer Tutor/Mentor Training on October 9
We want our tutor and mentor volunteers to be as trained and as prepared as possible, and we are thrilled to include them in our learning center staff training whenever possible. Our next training will focus on working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered or Questioning/Queer youth. It's scheduled for Friday, October 9, 10 a.m. - noon at our New Brookside site (601 Four Mile Road, Alexandria, 22305). If you are a volunteer tutor or mentor, please RSVP to Melanie at  melanieficke@community-lodgings.org.
