5 Unique Alternatives to Traditional Mother's Day Gifts
Let’s be honest, moms deserve the world. So, we know it can be difficult to find a gift each and every Mother’s Day that shows how much we truly appreciate all they’ve done for us. Maybe it’s time to push aside the traditional hanging basket and consider a different approach that will make her special day a bit more special. Here are 4 unique and customizable garden-related gift options your mom will “dig” this Mother’s Day!

1. Custom herb or flower container combo
Stop by our Cedar Hills, Lake Oswego, or Seaside store through May 9th (or while supplies last) to visit our DIY creation bar and plant a one-of-a-kind herb or flower combination—a personal garden gift you know she’ll love.

Choose between a 10-inch combo that includes five plants and a 12-inch combo including seven plants. Following the step-by-step instructions, design a custom masterpiece. We welcome you to pot your custom creation up in-store using our complimentary potting supplies!
2. Good ol' gift card from your local plant shop

Perhaps your mom is a garden lover, but you have no idea which plants she likes. Why not “leaf” the decision to her, pick up a Dennis' 7 Dees gift card, and take her on an epic shopping spree? Digital gift cards are available now online and can be emailed instantly for quick, hassle-free gifting.
3. Tropical indoor plants for the home
Plants make a house become a home. Choose a houseplant you know your mom will love from our oasis of tropical indoor plants. And while you’re at it, pick a pretty planter from our vast selection to put it in! Grab an anthurium or peace lily for the mom that loves indoor blooms!
4. Custom terrarium creation

It’s a fact—moms love when you make something just for them. We know this because they plastered our terrible Kindergarten artwork all over the fridge. Visit our Bridgeport and Rejuvenation locations to create a tiny greenhouse just for her!
5. Living bouquet for the garden

Itoh peonies are a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies. The result is large, stunning spring blooms on a compact plant. With so many lust-worthy flowers blooming on one plant, the Itoh peony creates a living bouquet in the garden!
We know moms everywhere will love these unique Mother’s Day gifts, but for the mom who still appreciates the traditional, we have gorgeous hanging baskets and even care kits available. You really can’t go wrong!

Plant of the Week: Ogon Nishiki
Multicolor Star Jasmine a.k.a. Trachelospermum asiaticum ‘Ogon Nishiki’ is our cool plant of the week, and it has recently landed at all our garden center locations!

This variegated jasmine is not bashful. In fact, it is grown more for the brilliant, colorful leaves than for its flowers. Not known to be a prolific bloomer, this jasmine has dramatic, glossy leaves that vary in color from deep green to bright gold and even orange. When it does occasionally bloom, the flowers are creamy white and fragrant, similar to its relative Green Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides).

The brightest foliage color comes from exposure to full sun, but plants will also grow in dappled or partial shade and colors often intensify in colder weather. Evergreen and hardy to USDA Zone 7 or 0 degrees F, plants are somewhat slow to get established and not overly aggressive when vining, growing up to about 10 feet tall. They can even be grown as a groundcover at about 6–8 inches tall and look great when trailing out of a container for year-round interest. They are drought tolerant once established, but grow faster with summer watering and fuller with light pruning. This jasmine is amazingly adaptable to different soils and sun exposures and durable once established. It is also tolerant of seaside conditions (salt spray) and moderately deer-resistant. Use caution when pruning, as the white sap may cause mild skin irritation.

So, do you have a pot that needs a splashy spiller or a spot in your garden waiting for a flashy filler? Multicolor Star Jasmine might be just the plant you have been looking for—stop in soon and pick one up before they are O-gon!
Fantastic Trees Under 20 Feet Tall
The list of small garden trees is a relatively short one—most trees will grow taller than 20 feet as they mature, and many trees become nearly as wide as they are tall over time. Most small garden trees prefer filtered light or dappled shade, as they are naturally found in the understory with taller trees providing them with shade.

Recent plant breeding introductions have produced dwarf selections and smaller cultivars of normally larger specimens such as ‘Little Gem’ and ‘Baby Grand’ Evergreen Magnolias, and more varieties become available each year. While we are focusing on deciduous and broad-leafed evergreen trees, there are many fantastic conifers that stay small and would look great in any size garden. In addition to traditional single-trunk trees, many shrubs can be grown as small, multi-trunked trees, or even trained into growing with a single trunk for a more formal appearance.
Acer/Maple

  • Vine maples (Acer circinatum) grow to 20 feet tall/wide and have fresh, light green leaves that turn orange and red in fall with partial to full sun; one of our best native trees for small gardens
  • Full Moon Japanese maples (Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum’) and many other upright Japanese maples, including Flame maple (Acer ginnala) and Paperbark maple (Acer griseum), can grow to 25 feet tall
Cornus/Dogwood

  • ‘Satomi’ (20 feet tall and wide) has pink flowers that bloom in June; disease-resistant cultivar with red fruits and orange/red fall color
  • ‘Wolf Eyes’ (10–20 feet tall and wide) has creamy white flowers and wavy, variegated foliage that turns red/pink in fall with occasional red fruit
